No.3 Gareth Owen on Mike Lake - and promotion

A good year for the other Owen

It’s Saturday May 8th 1993 and the Reds are celebrating promotion at their last home league game of the season against Colchester...

The cast:

Int: Gaz, you must be happy at the way the seasons gone. You have been in the division three PFA team and some Welsh under 21 caps and of course promotion. Best season so far for you?

Gaz: Yeah, err, I am very pleased for all this lot here. It has been a great season like, err, the club has achieved a lot this year. Aah, if you just look up now, err, its going to be a carnival atmosphere today and I’m really looking forward to it.

Int: Do you enjoy playing with Mike Lake? It has been your partnership in the middle of midfield that has driven us on to promotion hasn’t it?

Gaz: Err, yeah, I have enjoyed playing with Mike, he has brought, you know, a bit out in my game that I didn’t think I had like, err, I have shored my game up a lot now, I am not trying as much err difficult stuff as I used to. So, err, aye, it has been great playing with him, but it has been brilliant playing in such a successful team this year.

Int: Well, good luck for today, I hope one of those err quick runs gets a goal for us. Are you confident for today's match?

Gaz (misunderstanding question): Sure, I hope so yeah.

Int: Thanks mate.

Gaz: Alright mate, cheers.

(The interviewer is nodding throughout and smiling. He obviously couldn’t believe that he was interviewing such a legend. Later on, he goes on to interview Jon Cross - then he wasn’t smiling...)
