Pre-Match Comments |
|
Brian Flynn: "It's a nice little period we are in at the moment. Three points tomorrow would give us the magical 50 points which should be enough to keep us up." [Source: Evening Leader]
John Beck: "I don't know much about them to be honest. I've had a team report that says they have a guy called Lee Trundle banging in loads of goals and a 6ft 7ins guy at the back from Trinidad and Tobago. They're on a high at the moment we're on a low, and if you were a betting man you wouldn't give us a chance, but we'll give it our best shot." [Source: BBC News]
Team News |
|
Cambridge United | Wrexham |
New manager John Beck is boosted by the news that top scorer Tom Youngs has recovered sufficiently from injury to start the match against Wrexham. The timing could not have been any better for Beck, who is in his second spell in charge at the Abbey Stadium, as striker Ritchie Humphreys is out for the season after breaking his foot at Luton in midweek. Loan striker Omer Riza is the only other recognised striker available. Midfielder Terry Flemming signed from Plymouth on a free in midweek and he goes straight into the squad. Cambridge have been open about their team selection with beck confirming that Scott Oakes and Alex Russell will play a half each after returning from injury. Assistant Manager Shane Wstley has confirmed that Cambridge are likely to go with a 3-5-2 formation. Former Sunderland goalkeeper Lionel Perez has been struggling with injury but he is expected to make it. | Following the thrilling comeback against Oxford in midweek Brian Flynn is unlikely to make many changes as Wrexham go for their fourth successive win. Striker Craig Faulconbridge is available after suspension but he will have to settle for a place on the bench, as the successful partnership of Lee Trundle and Andy Morrell is expected to continue. With Phil Hardy still out injured Brian Flynn will continue with a back four of Lee Roche, Mark McGregor, Brian Carey and Dave Ridler with Kevin Dearden in goal. Dennis Lawrence was expected to be available but Wrexham still haven't received the necessary international clearance to play the Trinidadian international. Michael Blackwood and Carlos Edwards replaced Robin Gibson and Paul Barrett in the second half against Oxford and they both added much needed width to Wrexham's game. If Brian Flynn doesn't make any changes then Barrett and Gibson will be in midfield alongside Darren Ferguson and Kevin Russell. |

Brian Flynn speaking to Rob Phillips of BBC Wales |
Brian Flynn: "Obviously we are in the middle of a good run and the lads are playing well, which is pleasing. We showed great spirit to come back, as we were a bit disappointed to go in at half time one goal behind. If you make one mistake and get away with it fine, but we made three in the matter if 30 seconds and got punished for it. But like I say, a great comeback. Lee was once again heavily involved and he's certainly unpredictable. Of his six goals, he's scored three chips and an overhead, while creating late winners here and at Walsall. He's given us that little bit of extra dimension in terms of up front. There has never been any thought about restricting his actions, you have to give players like that free reign. When strikers are in such a rich vein you just let them carry on. To find some one like Lee Trundle gives everyone a lift. When he came in training for that week, he immediately gained the respect of the other players and once you have got that, you have half a chance. We needed his spark when we had gone two goals down and it brought us back to life. Possibly the key moment in the game could have been when they were 1- 0 up and Andy Morrell missed that chance, but delighted for him and that he's got the winner. To be fair to Andy he's been scoring regularly in the reserves, some 16 goals in 14 games, although he's not started regularly until this recent run due to injuries and what have you, but now he's got his chance it's up to him to take it. We have now reached 50 points, which is a nice feeling. We've still got a number of games to go, so over the weekend we'll have to assess where we are in relation to others in the league. Without knowing all the results, if we are within single figures of the play-offs, then we may have a chance. Any greater than that and it gets very difficult, for example to win four games at this stage also means other teams have to lose that number and it's hard. This is this fourth time that we have started with the same consecutive team and up until now we hadn't won two consecutive games and as I've said, it's a nice period we are in at the moment." |
John Beck: "I don't want to be negative towards my boys, I've only just got into the job and still assessing the players. I would just like to say that I thought Wrexham were too good for us. They played some very good football and how the hell we were 1-0 up at half time I don't know. All due credit to Wrexham, they were too good for us. What I've seen of Wrexham they have some very good footballers, they have pace and power up front, and they play attractive football. Which is what I think is needed in this division and I hope that they way they play does get them into the play-offs, they deserve it, certainly on what I've seen today. I've only been in the job for 10 days and it's far too early to assess things here. I'm looking behind the scenes, they way they prepare for games and the way they train, we are looking at every individual very closely. Making a quick assessment we do need a bit more athleticism and people that have the ability to express themselves, we do need to strengthen every department, but I suppose if you talk to Sir Alex Ferguson then he wants to do the same and we certainly do. I'm now going to go home, be cool, calm and collected. Look at the video and come back with constructive criticism for the dressing room. I think it's wrong of any manager to criticise outside of the dressing room. It's the right thing to do for the boys as we are still trying to team build, and how can I as the leader say one thing inside the dressing room and another outside. Obviously there were things that were not quite right, but we will put them right given the time. This game has now gone and we were not good enough to win it, I thought Wrexham were too good for us, now we have to move onto the next one." |
