Listen to former Welsh international Dai Davies: "Wrexham really are struggling"

Press Conference Quotes
Brian Flynn: "I'll be getting in touch with the Football League to ask for a bye next season! It's a disastrous competition for us. We didn't really perform in the first half; the second half was better, we put a bit more pressure on them and were more lively going forward. We made the substitutions tactically to see if we could get at them, wider and earlier, and they nearly paid off. Kevin Russell has had a couple of niggling injuries and played the full ninety minutes yesterday for the reserves, and did well. His enthusiasm was infectious for the players around him. Conceding goals is a problem. We're working hard at it and the players know their responsibilities. We just have to keep working hard. How do you legislate for big Dennis completely mistiming a ball and allowing a player completely clear on goal? Mistakes do happy and we have to accept that. That one was a genuine mistake, and it happened at a point when we looked like we could get back in the game. Brian's sending off was purely frustration. He's an experienced defender and he should have known better really. Rebuilding confidence starts first thing in the morning. That's the coaching staff's job, and that will be done. As for the limited playing staff, we've got what we've got. We want more, but in the current circumstances we can't. We've been told we can't bring any more players in, so we have to go with what we've got. We'd like to make changes, I think every manager would like to make changes, unless they've got a squad of fifty players. There might be some managers in that position in the Premiership, but it's not the case lower down. I'm not depressed. We've had three games so far this season, we've got a young side, a new back four, a young goalkeeper, some young players still learning their trade, and we have to be patient with them. They'll have to grow up quickly, because we need that little bit more at the moment. The experienced players are doing as much as they possibly can to help them. I've mentioned Kevin's example." Brian Little: "I though we played well and deserved to win the game. We had a decision to make as to whether we'd go there with a pretty cautious approach or try and attack them. In the end we plumped for the second option as we have plenty of pace and flair in the side and thought that we could unsettle Wrexham by taking the game to them. That's how it turned out and we played some good football, particularly in the first 20 minutes." [Source: Hull City AFC]
Brian Flynn: "This is a disastrous competition for us. We have never done well in it and the only way we will reach the second round is by getting a bye!" [Source: Sports.com]
Kevin Smith: "We had a good start with an early goal and played some good stuff, but we were disappointed conceding goals later." [Source: Sports.com]

Roundup

Brian Talbot's strategy of travelling up to Burnley 36 hours before the kick off paid off handsomely as his young side, making their Worthington Cup debut, overcame Burnley 3-2. Two up after 50 minutes through Peters and Mustafa, Burnley hit back with Ian Moore, but Darby made it safe with 15 to go. A Bobby Zamora brace within ten minutes towards the start of the second half gave Brighton safe passage against Wimbledon. Mark Williams' first in the competition was sandwiched between both Zamora strikes. Blackpool's Brett Ormerod went one better, grabbing a hat-trick to dump out Wigan. It's 13 goals in the last nine matches for the Blackburn-born striker who's starting this season as he finished the last. Marcus Gayle got his first for Watford since his transfer from Rangers, saving manager Vialli's blushes with an 82nd minute strike against Plymouth. Brentford grabbed a last minute winner to stop the Canaries singing, O'Connor the hero, but there was hearbreak for York who held First Division Crewe in extra-time, but went down 6-5 on penalties. Kidderminster held Preston to extra-time also, but Jackson's 99th minute goal saw the Lilywhites through. There were other divisional upsets at Portsmouth, who were beaten 2-1 by Colchester and at Wrexham who lost by the odd goal in five against Hull. They also had Carey sent-off in the last minute. Neighbouring Mansfield and Notts County don't often meet, these days, and it was a close-run thing at Field Mill, County running out 4-3 winners. The Stags came back from 4-1 down in the first-half, Richard Liburd was sent off and Notts' goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall scored with a free-kick from just outside his own area. [Source: ClubCall]
