Press Conference Quotes
Denis Smith: "First half I thought we were in control, but they have come back at us in the second and their first shot on target is a great strike, after which they put us under a great deal of pressure. Considering we have had two previous hard away games with a great deal of travelling, we have done well. I have got a 17-year-old making his full debut tonight, but he has done tremendously well to withstand that type of pressure. The pitch didn’t help our type of football and still we’ve scored two good goals and possibly could have had a penalty, which will be interesting to look at again as Andy seemed to be done by the keeper. There are times when you can’t beat everybody, so we treat every team with respect. A local derby was always going to be difficult, they battled tremendously hard and with the pitch being like it was, it was difficult to get the ball down and play. But we have got the result we wanted and now it’s all about results rather than performances. We are running out of games now and the longer we can stay in third the more it puts the pressure on others. People must have been looking at us with our games in hand and been wondering what we can do with them. Well that’s four points out of two of them and we have another to go. So if we can do better than other teams and with some playing each other, then we can stay there. Lee Jones is quality finisher, but he has just not been fit for long enough. I wanted to win the game tonight, but I didn’t think we were enough in control to go three-up, so I thought OK, lets see what Jonnah can do going long with a bit of pace, rather than Trunds holding it up short. Maybe that was the little bit of luck we needed! There was no doubt about the second goal, Lee certainly wasn’t offside. Someone was trotting back, but he wasn’t interfering with play or doing anything illegal, so it wasn’t a problem. If I’d have said we would get seven points from the three away games, then you would have said take it. They have been difficult trips, with Boston a massive journey and perhaps we were a bit unfortunate not to take the three points, because we dominated that game more than the other two in which have taken full points! Hull was a good performance and tonight was about battling for everything we got. I still can’t get over Morgs. The lad is only 17, it’s ridiculous, he was the one who looked the most composed! Then we have our own Zidane bursting through midfield – Ziden and his mazy runs!" [Source: Wrexham FC]
Kevin Ratcliffe: "I felt first half we weren't really there and allowed them to dictate the pace of the game, but in the second half we've got into the game and not looked back. Until the last minute where a lapse in concentration, where we're claiming for an offside when we're so far up the pitch and against some like Lee Jones who's got pace, and that's a killer. The way that we've played where we've got up and at them, I think we deserved at least a point. We didn't get going in the first half as we were trying to play football, when we should have been getting behind them. They had three at the back and we were playing three up front to get behind them, but we were playing balls into feet, we never got the ball to Sam quick enough and everything we worked on yesterday we weren't doing. In the second half we did what we'd worked on yesterday and when the tempo of the game stepped up we got in amongst them, and they began to make mistakes. It's a great strike from Jamie Tolley, and then he's had another straight after that, and it gets you back into the game. All we were concerned about with was keeping it tight, they had a few balls over the top that caused us a few problems, but other than that we looked the most likely. The lads are very disappointed but the positive is that we've done ever so well in the second half, and have been very unlucky not to come away with anything tonight. When things aren't going for you they never go for you, so you've got to make them happen and what we've got to do is roll our sleeves up for Saturday and get something at Darlington. I thought the lads gave us everything and can't ask anything more from them other than a result. One or two have made mistakes in the game but they've given their all, Steve Jagielka didn't have the best of games early on until he kicked in second half, but his head hasn't dropped he's got on with the game and that shows great character. I've said all along that we've not defended the best this season, but it helps when the pressures taken of at the other end, and at times I don't think we've made the best of the pressure we've had. There was a little push and shove between Carts and Dave Artell, but at the end of the day you've got to express to people your not happy and Dave's done that. Dave's though that Carts should have dealt with it, but I think Dave should have dealt with it but Carts should have told him that. That reaction is good and I like to see it from my players, one criticism I've had of them is that they are too nice to each other at times. When the lads do what we tell them to do they are a different side. It was more like a cup tie second half, when we play at a high tempo we're all right, when we play at a slow tempo and don't have the ball players in the side we don't do well. We've proved we can hurt teams, what we need to do now is show we can finish teams off." [Source: Shrewsbury Town FC]
