Press Conference Quotes

Denis Smith: "You won't see better football than that played in the Third Division this season! It appears Lee Jones has damaged his ankle ligaments. We'll have to see how serious it is, but he's a big doubt for Saturday. They gave Carlos the man of the match, which I think was possibly my choice as well, but I might possibly have gone for Pejic. He was outstanding.  We have passed and moved it, and in the end we have had to take a gamble and put three up front, but it's worked and I'm delighted. I said the lads at half time that if they kept doing what they were doing, then something's got to go in. As it was, it was a very good cross and a very good finish. If you keep playing that sort of football, then something has to go for you. We brought it out from the back, passed, we got it wide, we got balls into the box, so sooner or later, someone had to get on the end of it. I was delighted though with our performance. I don't know what it looked like from up in the stands, but from down on the sidelines it looked a superb performance. You won't get much better football in this division."

Steven Thomas: "Obviously I was at the game on Saturday and wasn't involved due to my illness earlier in the week. I thought we did well against Scunthorpe and could have got three points. We came away with a draw, which I suppose was a fair result, and then we followed it up with a win tonight, a great start at home in front of the fans. With the amount of possession we had we could have scored a few. At half time we just said that it was a matter of time before we scored, and just had to turn our possession into goals. It was left until the last two minutes, but it was great to see Hector rise at the far post with that great header! It was a great substitution, he went for it and it came off. I thought the fans were brilliant too. We played three midfielders with Jim sitting and Paul Barrett and I pushing on. I felt good, although in the last five minutes I did feel a bit tired, to be honest. I really enjoyed the game and now I'm looking forward to Boston!"

Paul Barrett: "Obviously I didn't think the goal would come, but we kept probing, kept passing the ball, never over-complicated things, and deservedly got the goal near the end. I wish we'd have got it earlier on because I was beginning to think that we weren't going to get it, but we kept at it and kept passing the ball, and to be honest they never got close. All the lads seem to be gelling, and as long as we can keep that going we should be alright. We've been working on a lot of different formations. We played with the four across the middle on Saturday and the five tonight, and it seemed to work. Then we had to change it again to 3-4-3 to push for the win! Obviously it suits me because I'm able to push forward, I'm able to go box-to-box, which suits me because I wouldn't exactly say I'm a holding player! Playing a three allows me to push on, which benefits me. It's very different from last season. The more times you get beaten the more down you get, the confidence isn't there and you're not looking forward t the next game, you're thinking "Oh no, not again!" when a goal goes in. Hopefully this season we can keep winning and confidence should be sky-high. I've never seen Hector win a header in training though!"

Ian Atkins: "To lose in the manner we did – a ball round to the back post and someone getting inside your full back seven yards out – it's very disappointing. Basically, the manner the goal went in was scandalous. I thought all night there were too many crosses coming in. The disappointing thing is that we had experienced players out there, and it took them a long time to adjust to the way Wrexham were playing. When you come away from home you have got to earn the right to win, and we didn't do that tonight. Wrexham have only just been relegated and have got second division players. We competed with them out there, but we could have done a lot better in certain areas. I thought our full backs should have been better all night, full stop. Everybody worked hard, the two centre halves did well and I never felt in any danger in terms of them scoring a goal. But we could have kept the ball better – we gave it away to cheaply. There are no excuses. I was disappointed with certain individuals, but a lot of people have dug in tonight. The disappointing thing is that we did struggle with trying to change things to combat Wrexham's system. But saying that, how many people are going to come here and win this season? Wrexham will be there or thereabouts.
