Press Conference Quotes
Denis Smith: "Once we had been in the lead twice, you do expect to hold on. Everybody tells me these are one of the best in the league and they have won all their previous home games. So to twice get in the lead we should have been able to hold on. We haven’t done that and it’s disappointing. They were not good goals to concede. Dibbs has made a good save for the first one but he’s not been helped out on the rebound and that’s poor defending. That’s not down to the defenders either, because I know who should have been marking the lad. The second was just a lump up field, where we had two against one and we should have dealt with it. I can’t say they didn’t deserve anything out of the game, as they had plenty of possession. They worked hard against us and caused us problems. At times we looked like we had divers boots on. We have had a hard week and some of the players looked tired. Others were playing well, but we need to be firing on all cylinders. We didn’t pass the ball as well as we have and you can give credit to Rushden for that. Though we still had chances, Hector should have made it two-nil and Dan could have done a lot better with the only decent bit of play we have had. Andy is full of confidence, but he’s also a little bit tired as well and didn’t work as well as he has. The position we had trouble today was in central defence and maybe I should have brought Steve Roberts off before I did. He didn’t deal with the big lad particularly well, as he has in the last three matches, but it’s a learning process. I was hoping for three points today, now we have to go to Darlington on Tuesday looking for a win to give us the minimum of four points that I would expect out of the two games.”
Brian Talbot: "It was a great game of football and I obviously have to praise my players. They have come back from a lot of problems because we only have 16 fit players to choose from. Then all of a sudden we are forced to take off Barry Hunter and Mark Peters during the game. But the young kids did brilliant because they were playing against the form side and to be honest we could have won it. I’ve said to them in the dressing room that if we have that spirit all the time then we won’t lose many games this season. We played a good team today and we matched them, no problem. To come back twice from a goal down was absolutely first class. We scored two good goals; the second goal especially was good and well taken from Paul Hall. Everybody keeps telling me that Wrexham are the best side in the division. It’s a shame we could not play them with a full strength team but we matched them. They had good spells in the game but so do we. It was a good match to watch and the lads can be proud of their performance because they matched them every inch of the way.”
