Press Conference Quotes |
Denis Smith: "It was a sweet victory and a very, very good performance, although a week too late for the FA Cup! Three goals didn't flatter us and we could have gone on to score four, five or six. I'm pleased as the lads got a bit of a roasting last Saturday and we had a long talk about it on Monday morning. But a lot of hard work went into the basic stuff this week in training and we did well today. Our work rate and everything was first class, while the clean sheet has also pleased me. As the back three have had some flak this season but today we stood up to the task." [Source: Wrexham FC - click here for more] |
Ray Graydon: “The crowd have been fantastic, I couldn’t criticise them at all. When things are not going well in terms of results the fans get increasingly frustrated, and I can understand that exactly, and I sympathise with how they’re feeling. The fans, whoever they are, come to every game to see us win, and that’s what they pay their money for. When your team’s losing as a fan you’re well within your rights to vent your frustration. The opposition we faced today has to be given a lot of credit, they were fantastic. They have a fantastic team, with a great work ethic, and they’ve shown today there’s a reason why they’re near the top of the table." [Source: Bristol Rovers FC - click here for more] |

League Roundup |

A brace from Eifion Williams gave Mike Newell a winning start to his reign as manager of Third Division leaders Hartlepool. The Welsh striker netted in the 26th and 72nd minutes to see off Leyton Orient 2-1 at Brisbane Road, with substitute Scott Canham scoring the Os' only goal. Rushden & Diamonds remain four points adrift of Pools in second place as they also won 2-1 on the road at Lincoln. David Bell (27) and Stuart Wardley (56) gave them a two-goal cushion before Peter Gain's 83rd-minute effort made it a nervous finish for the Diamonds. The gap between second and third place extended to three points after Bournemouth overtook Torquay to climb into the final automatic promotion spot. The Cherries won 1-0 at Southend as Gareth O'Connor's 71st-minute penalty proved the difference between the two sides. Torquay led 3-0 after 10 minutes at Macclesfield but were pegged back to 3-3 at the end. Early goals from David Graham, Jason Fowler and David Woozley appeared to put Leroy Rosenior's team in charge but Macclesfield responded as David Eaton (31) got one back. Steve Macauley gave the Silkmen a glimmer of hope with a quarter of an hour to go and Kyle Lightbourne rescued a point three minutes from time. Wrexham are up to fifth as they bid to make an instant return to Division Two. Today they beat Bristol Rovers 3-0 at the Memorial Stadium as Andy Morrell's first-half double took his goal tally for the season to 16 and Lee Trundle added a third with 15 minutes left. Cambridge also climbed a place to sixth with a win in an ill-tempered match against Exeter at St James Park. Five players were dismissed - three for Exeter and two for Cambridge - in the final seconds as fisticuffs broke out. Steve Flack (11) put Exeter ahead but the Us fought back with goals from Shane Tudor (34) and Dave Kitson (81). Scunthorpe heaped further misery on basement club Swansea with a 2-0 win at Glanford Park, a result which hoisted the Iron up to seventh. Martin Carruthers kept his cool to score a 23rd-minute penalty and Matthew Sparrow wrapped it up with a goal on the stroke of half-time. Bury moved to the cusp of the play-off places, up from 10th to eighth with a 2-1 win over Carlisle. They had to come from behind to claim the points after Peter Murphy (61) had given the Cumbrians the lead, Lee Unsworth equalising in the 73rd minute and player boss Andy Preece netting the winner two minutes later. Hull's renaissance under Peter Taylor continued as they moved into 11th from 14th with a 1-0 win over Boston. Damien Delaney's 49th-minute goal means the Tigers are unbeaten in their seven league matches under their new manager. Little changed at the bottom of the table as the bottom five clubs - Swansea, Boston, Exeter, Bristol Rovers and Carlisle - all lost. Darlington came from two goals down to rescue a point from a 2-2 draw at Shrewsbury. Luke Rodgers fired the home side in front after only 53 seconds, and Ian Stevens doubled the lead in the 25th minute. Barry Conlon gave Darlington hope with a 53rd-minute header and Clark Keltie equalised with a 25-yarder seven minutes from time. Rochdale's poor league form continued thanks to Peter Duffield's 72nd-minute winner in York's 1-0 victory. Duffield's bullet header, his ninth goal of the season, was harsh on the home side, who had matched City shot for shot. The visitors were forced into some desperate defending in the latter stages, with striker Paul Connor hitting the woodwork. The clash between Kidderminster and Oxford has been postponed due to a waterlogged Aggborough pitch. [Source: Sporting Life] |
