Press Conference Quotes |
Denis Smith: "One goal either way was
going to win it and we still had the option to go with three up front, just
as they did when they were chasing it. We started the second half well and I
don’t think anyone can argue that we didn’t deserve to score at that stage.
Andy was looking a bit leggy, so on came Hector and he’s gone and done the
business. It was the sort of result that we have not been able to do
previously. It got a bit physical at times, but now when people get physical
we can cope with them and responded with like. I thought the back three
played well for me today. Jim Whitley came into his own in the second half,
while Holmsey did much better. With Andy coming off, it left me a bit short
of height at set pieces, so bringing on Dan Bennett gave me a few more
options with high balls. We have had a good pre-season and have carried it
on. Now we have to make sure we carry that on for the next 42 games! The lads are into tomorrow and we have to start thinking about Rochdale from no on." [Source: Wrexham AFC] |
David Moss: "We need to be able to finish off opposition when the chances come along and we had chances today. Andy Dibble played very well and made a few top class saves but we were beaten by a soft goal. Willo loooked like he was going to collect it comfortably but it took a deflection and went past him. It’s very annoying because that’s three goals we’ve conceded from deflections like this, this season. I said when it happened that his save from Lightbourne could be a matchwinner and unfortunately I was proved right. I admit that the home problems are a worry. I try to play it down a bit because it serves no psychological purpose to sit and fret about it. I’m obviously disappointed to have only picked up one point from a possible six but I feel we performed well in both games." [Source: Macclesfield Town FC] |
Andy Dibble: "I don't want any credit. It's just my job, it's the lads in front of me that deserve the praise." |

League Roundup |
||||
Wrexham were the biggest winners
of the afternoon climbing seven places to second spot after the 1-0 win at
Macclesfield and courtesy of all teams above them failing to win. Rushden
and Diamonds are ahead of Wrexham on goal difference after a 1-1 draw at
Shrewsbury, who are now in fifth spot. Rodgers opened the scoring for
Shrewsbury with his fourth goal of the season only for Darby to equalise for
Diamonds. Shrewsbury missed a chance to take top spot when skipper Nigel Jemson had a penalty saved by Billy Turley. Hartlepool are in third spot after their 1-1 draw at Torquay but will be disappointed not to have taken all three points after the home side were reduced to ten men with fifteen minutes left. Hartlepool took the lead when Humphreys gave ex-Wrexham keeper Kevin Dearden no chance with a spectacular 30 yard volley only for Richardson to equalise two minutes later with a header from a Hankin corner. Jason Fowler was dismissed for picking up two bookings in as many minutes, the second after squaring up with Barron who also received a caution. York remain in fourth spot despite going down to their first defeat at Scunthorpe. The Iron took the lead after only a minute when Thorpey fired home from a Carruthers centre but York levelled through Harden in the 25th minute when he headed home Brackstone's in swinging corner at the back post. Scunthorpe won the game after a mix up in the York defence when they seemingly just passed the ball to Carruthers who had the simple task to score from close range. Cambridge were grateful for the form of keeper Shaun Marshall as he pulled of three first have saves to deny Leyton Orient. Kiston opened the scoring for Cambridge after he ran onto a through ball from Riza but Leyton Orient were through three times themselves but could not get past the inspired Marshall. Fletcher was the first to be denied and then Marshall blocked a Martin strike that looked destined to burst the net and then he plucked the ball off the head of Thorpe who looked certain to head in at the far post. Martin was finally beaten when a cross from Campbell-Ryce took a deflection of Guttridge giving the keeper no chance but United won all three points through Warner after Kitson had a header blocked on the line. Rochdale will be happy with their draw at home to Darlington after being put under a lot of pressure by the visitors in the second half. Rochdale did take the lead when McEvilly controlled the ball on the edge of the area and fired in a low drive into the bottom corner. Hadland equalised against his former club and Darlington were denied victory when keeper Edwards pulled off a double save from Conlon and then Clark late on. Oxford went down to a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Southend who scored the only goal in the second of their six attacks of the game. Beard was put through down the right by Jones and the pinpoint cross was headed in by Rawle. Bristol Rovers are still looking for their first win of the season after a 0-0 draw at Carlisle but wasted a glorious opportunity when Tait hit the post from the spot after he was brought down in the area by Murphy. Swansea must wish they can play Bournemouth every week after a mix up between keeper Tardiff and defender Tindall left Wood the simple task of slotting the ball in the empty net after only 15 seconds! Mumford celebrated his call up to the Wales under 21s squad when he sealed the victory with a leader late on from a Reid corner. Bournemouth's misery was compounded when they had Young sent off for a late tackle on Jenkins. Exeter let slip a 2-0 lead as Kidderminster came from behind to win a thrilling game 4-3 at Aggborough. Exeter took the lead after three minutes when Steve Flack took advantage of the space on the edge of the box to drill a powerful shot home. Kidderminster missed a good chance soon after when Parrish headed straight at Kevin Miller from only six yards and this miss was to prove costly when Michael Thomas doubled Exeter's lead with an excellent finish from Lee Sharpe's cross after 15 minutes. Kidderminster pulled one back through Henriksen's close range strike and six minutes later the scores were level after a good strike from Lee Ayres. Henriksen completed the comeback with a long range drive and Ayre added a fourth with a 67th minute volley. Exeter ensured a tense finish with a late strike from Andrew Ruscoe but Kidderminster hung on for a thrilling 4-3 victory. Pre season favourites Hull were booed off after their 1-1 draw at home to Bury as the Tigers are still looking for their first victory since Jan Molby took charge in April. Hull took the lead for the fourth time this season through Johnson but failed to capitalise on it and conceded a late goal in the first half when Abbott pounced on Glennon's parry from close range. Boston move their points tally into positive figures with their first ever league victory over county rivals Lincoln City. Weatherstone scored the first with a shot from the edge of the area and Clare added the decisive second late on. Lincoln looked as if they were going to grab an equaliser but their chances went when Yeo was sent off for kicking out at Rusk. |
