MATCH REPORT

STALEMATE

By Mark Williams

Pre match thoughts: Good pre season, new signings up front, playing at home in the opening game against a team expected to be relegated, looking forward to three points.

Conditions: Not a cloud in the sky. Too hot for football – probably around 100 degrees.

Sum up the performance in one sentence: Lacked that cutting edge to break down a stubborn defence.

Turning point: Chris Armstrong hitting both posts with one shot in the seventh minute.

Main incidents and goals:
0-15 minutes: Frantic start with Chesterfield having the first chance. Alan O’Hare was played through inside the area and with only Dibble to beat he failed at the first attempt, and then the second and somehow the third. Superb reflexes and bravery from Dibble and Dennis Lawrence cleared the danger. Equally amazing at the other end when Chris Armstrong’s shot hit the near post and then the far post before Chesterfield cleared the danger. Score 0-0

15-30 minutes: Not much happened as the heat began to take a toll on the players especially after the start. Blatherwick ended up in the book for a foul on Armstrong. Armstrong then went over in the box but quite rightly no penalty was given. Score 0-0.

30-45 minutes: Started with Ferguson in the book for a foul on Brandon. The foul did not look too bad but Ferguson did not react too kindly to the decision and that probably did for him. Paul Edwards skied over when the ball rebounded back to him after Llewellyn dwelled too long on the ball. Dibble did well with 6 minutes of the half left to keep Blatherwick’s header out and Glynn Hurst fired a shot cross Dibble’s goal as Chesterfield finished on stop. Half time 0-0.

I was confident of dispatching C'field with the minimum of fuss, but after a while the difference in standard between divs 2 and 3 became very apparent.

45-60 minutes: Wrexham started the second half on fire and especially Carlos Edwards who shaved the near post with his shot from outside of the area. Dennis Lawrence just failed to get any real contact on his header from Edwards’ right wing cross as his effort deflected wide. Chesterfield were now playing on the counter attack after Wrexham penned them in but Mark Allot broke forward for the Spireites but his shot went over. Shaun Pejic then had a rare shot on goal when he won the ball in midfield and was unlucky as his shot from 30 yards bent just wide of the post. Score 0-0.

60-75 minutes: Ian Evatt became the third player in the book for a late challenge on Paul Edwards and with twenty minutes of the game left Denis Smith replaced Chris Armstrong with Lee Jones. The substitute was straight in the thick of the action firing a shot from outside the area at Carl Muggleton. Soon after Dennis Lawrence headed a Steve Thomas cross over after Wrexham had caught the visitors napping with a short corner. Chris Llewellyn then had the perfect opportunity to open the scoring as Wrexham broke quickly from defending a corner. The striker collected the ball on the half way line before turning his marker. Llewellyn headed towards the Chesterfield goal with the last defender back pedaling to the 18 yard line. Llewellyn side stepped the defender to his right but over ran he ball and Muggleton smothered the ball from 12 yards as the striker was about to pull back the trigger. Score still 0-0.

75-90 minutes: Brandon should have given the visitors the lead with fifteen minutes left when the ball fell to him on the left side of the area but he somehow managed to flash his shot across the face on the goal and the ball ended up going out for a throw in! In the last ten minuets the best chance fell to the feet of Chris Llewellyn when Carlos Edwards’ deep right wing cross was deflected into his path. It came as a surprise to the striker and after his first touch the ball went away from him allowing Kevin Dawson to scramble the ball away for a corner. Final score 0-0.

Opposition and fans: Chesterfield looked well organised at the back but lacked any real cutting edge up front. Could probably do with a creative midfielder to add that spark. Just under 500 fans turned up which is a good turn out for a team not known for their large support.

Officials: A few strange decisions, which you now come to expect, but did OK and were helped with their being no controversial decisions to deal with.

Man of the Match: Carlos Edwards – all Wrexham’s attacking play came through him.

If you were Denis Smith: Check how much weight your players lost and that they are OK for Tuesday! Happy with the effort put in by the players and hopefully the striker partnership of Armstrong and Llewellyn will click sooner rather than later.

Post match thoughts: Thought we would win today but despite the effort put in we lacked that clinical edge up front. Bit concerned by the amount of chances the opposition created as you would expect the likes of QPR, Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday to take the majority of them.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
Denis Smith: "Obviously you want three points, and so did they, but to be honest if those had been animals out there, then we would have been in trouble with the RSPCA! That is the hottest I have seen at the start of a season and it’s ridiculous to have to play football in those kinds of conditions. I thought it was a reasonably good performance, which could have gone either way, which doesn’t surprise you as they are a solid Third Division side. They did what teams did to us last season, come here, sit in, make things difficult and catch us on the break. But as the season goes on we will got used to it and we will again. If Chris Armstrong’s chance had gone in and not hit the post then, all or once they have to come out and have a go at us, then we have the pace to get in behind them. I’m criticising, as it’s a tactic that I possible would have used against a team like us. Considering it ended 0-0, it wasn’t a typical 0-0 draw. The keepers have done well, with a couple of misses that should have been put away. It was hard out there. I’ve been on the touchline and I was burning. In fact, I’m still trying to get dry now, but for them to have been out there working in that heat is unbelievable. The players wanted to win, we had a good crowd, and I was delighted to see them here. We had a draw at the start of last season, so hopefully that’s a good omen!" Roy McFarland: "Its nice to get off the mark with a point, but once we digest everything, we’ll probably be a bit disappointed that we didn’t take all three. We broke well, used the ball well and had the better chances throughout the game. We were very tired at half time and looked a little bit “leggy” and vulnerable at the start of the second half. But we stuck at it; after five or ten minutes of that second half we rediscovered our composure and began to play the ball. I wouldn’t single out any individual today; I thought the whole team – the whole squad – were tremendous. We are creating chances. And we did look a threat. We need to tighten up on one or two things; getting that second ball from corners and long throws from Gus. That’s Mark Hudson’s best performance. He was superb today. The game will do Ian Evatt the world of good – I said that he’s not fully fit. We were going to bring him off but he put his hand up and said “No, I want to stay on,” which is pleasing."
