MATCH REPORT

NIGHTMARE AT LONDON ROAD

By Alun Thomas

PRE-MATCH THOUGHTS? Posh have only won twice at home in the League ; Wrexham have eight away victories. A home banker, then!

CONDITIONS? Raw, windy and wet. 30 yard sliding tackle weather - a pity Carey's out.

TACTICS? Don't make me laugh.

SUM UP OUR PERFORMANCE IN TWO SENTENCES? It's hard to believe that an entire team can have such a collective nightmare, so was something more sinister, based on the late payment of wages again, going on? It's not a pleasant thought, but this showing throws up questions that demand answers.

TURNING POINT? If there was one, it was taking the lead in surreal fashion. Within ten minutes we were behind, and after that it was downhill all the way.

MAIN INCIDENTS AND GOALS?

0-15 Minutes: The loss of Dibble on the quarter-hour was a blow but probably didn't affect the overall outcome. He had already tipped over spectacularly from Calum Willock when a collision with the same player saw him carried off with a broken arm. Score 0-0.

15-30 Minutes: We were already giving the ball away with alarming regularity and were visibly missing Roberts and Carey (in particular the latter's organisational skills). Lawrence, as senior defender, should have been taking control, but he was strangely subdued, as was Morgan. As for Pejic - well, all his shortcomings came home to roost today. We led through a strange goal from Llewellyn (even the celebrations were muted) but within a minute Willock was left unmarked to head Posh level. Score 1-1.

Can't blame the money problems for this performance.. We were just crap!!!

30-45 Minutes: Posh's Platt drove in the rebound after Whitfield had blocked another free header, and we were lucky to get to half-time without conceding again. Score 2-1.

45-60 Minutes: The appearance at the visiting end of some firemen led to talk of Posh being "on fire", although the flames were being fanned by Wrexham's ineptitude. Normally we can rely on the surging runs of Carlos to relieve pressure on the defence and set up attacks, but he can never have been so ineffective. Surely he's not suffering from Faulconbridge Syndrome? We gifted Peterborough their third (Willock again) and Sagi Burton's free-kick made it four. Score 4-1.

60-75 Minutes: What happened to the team who were so outstanding at places like Sheffield and Rushden earlier in the season? Of course, they were being paid on time then. Does that sound too cynical? Goals were going in on a regular basis now, sub Andy Clarke scoring the hosts' fifth. At this point my brother, a Newcastle fan who regularly travels from his Peterborough home to St. James's, and who I had persuaded to attend, left along with my Dad, and who could blame them? Score 5-1.

75-90 Minutes: Even I could mark Eddie out of a game these days. Jockey, wait for the obligatory step-over, shepherd him out to the corner flag. Ferguson's quick free-kick into the Posh area, straight to a home defender with not a red shirt in sight, summed our day up. Sam and Barrett on for Crowell and Morgan, with no noticeable improvement. "Can we play you every week?" roared the home fans as David Farrell took advantage of our generosity to complete the scoring. Armstrong - oh, he was playing, then - hit the bar in the last minute before the ref mercifully brought proceedings to a close. Score 6-1.

OPPOSITION AND FANS? Peterborough didn't look that much better but they've now got Bobby Gould on the staff and they'd clearly done their homework. Our midfielders were never given a chance to settle, the defence were constantly chased down and in centre-back Guy Branston they had the game's outstanding performer. A big, uncompromising stopper on loan from Rotherham, he rendered Chris Armstrong completely anonymous. The home fans, unused to visiting sides capitulating quite so willingly, enjoyed themselves hugely.

OFFICIALS? A couple of flags probably saved us from even worse humiliation.

MAN OF THE MATCH? Nobody. Not one player rose above mediocre.

IF YOU WERE DS? I'd be wishing I'd stayed in Portugal.

POST-MATCH THOUGHTS? Next up - Queen's Park Rangers.............

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Denis Smith: "I’ve said this season that for us to do well, we have to avoid suspensions and injuries. Today we had them and its cost us dear. On days like today you find out about players and some of them out there were out of their depth. I wasn’t very complimentary afterwards but one strength that we have had has been out defence. But if you take three out of your back five then you’re going to give yourself a problem. This was totally different to Bournemouth as that result was a fluke with 3 late goals and we were down to 10 men. This one bothers me because without being rude to Peterborough, Bournemouth were a far better team. We have too many people who think negative rather than positive and I’m talking about those out on the field. If they are not mentally strong enough then they should not be out there because the pressure comes when you are 2 or 3 down and you soon see who wants the ball, who don’t hide and will still chase and work." Barry Fry: "I felt their goal looked offside to start with, but it was a bad error from Mark. However, the lads didn't drop their heads and got straight back into the game when Calum scored. I didn't think Clive got tap-ins, so it was great to see him bury a chance. I was delighted to be 2-1 up at the interval. I said at half-time that Guy Branston was too sloppy and he came out second half and was magnificent, as they all were. It was a terrific team effort, the crowd appreciated their performance and it was great to score so many goals. I thought Sagi Burton's free-kick was fantastic. He fancies himself strongly at free-kicks, he practices them in training and it was great to see him score. He was magnificent. Even the substitutes did well, but we can't get carried away, we are still fifth from bottom in the league. We look forward to the game against Plymouth. Three wins on the trot has lifted everyone, but we know we are capable of better. The lads played some good stuff against Wrexham and I am delighted with the performance and the result. We have to keep our feet firmly on the ground, we are still in a bad position and there is a lot of hard work to do between now and the end of the season if we are to retain our Second Division status, which is the obvious objective."
