MATCH REPORT

By Alun Thomas

PRE-MATCH THOUGHTS? Two games, no goals. The vultures aren't exactly gathering but it's Time To Get This Show On The Road. This is a good opportunity against perennial drop-dodgers Notts.

CONDITIONS? Hot and sunny, pitch in excellent early-season nick.

SUM UP PERFORMANCE IN ONE SENTENCE? Truly a game for which the expression "a game of two halves" was invented.

TURNING POINT? Without a doubt the introduction of a fired-up Sam for the ineffective, and ineffectual, Armstrong.

MAIN INCIDENTS AND GOALS?
0-15 mins: Desperate stuff from both sides. No goal attempts. Only Dennis Lawrence showing any composure. Score 0-0.

15-30 mins: Wayward passing, botched clearances everywhere. No goal attempts. Lawrence emerging as the game's outstanding performer. Score 0-0.

30-45 mins: More unimaginative by the minute. Smart save by Dibble. Lawrence at times seemed to be playing Notts County on his own. Score 0-0.

45-60 mins: immediate improvement once Sam was on for Armstrong and Barrett appeared for Whitley, who never got into the game. Carlos and Eddie suddenly looked vibrant while Notts were unable to raise their game. Score 0-0.

Hector Sam - Scored the winner

60-75 mins: Wrexham turned the screw and on 66 minutes Carlos crossed low for Hec Sam of Wrec Sam to score from close range. His chant boomed around the ground, and rightly so. Ferguson just failed to finish off a sweet move but we couldn't quite find a second, killer goal, although Sam's thundering diving header was only inches away. Score 1-0.

75-90 mins: Some decent football played by the visitors, albeit with a few scares at the back. The worst of these was when Ferguson played in Llewellyn, who allowed the keeper to save and start an attack which resulted in a corner in the last minute. Dibble tipped away the only two real chances Notts had, while Sam, cleverly released by Ferguson (again) shot hopelessly wide. Final Score 1-0.

OPPOSITION AND FANS? Looks like long, hard winter for Notts. I thought Darren Caskey was fat supporter who had run onto the pitch! Their fans did manage to raise a chant after about 80 minutes, I think.

OFFICIALS? Ultimately it didn't matter but Mr. C. Boyeson can't fail to have better games than this. His booking of Dennis Lawrence was nothing short of scandalous.

MAN OF THE MATCH? Step forward Mr. Dennis Lawrence - the best individual performance I think I've ever seen from a Wrexham player and a shining example to all the other players.

IF YOU WERE DS? "Stay there, Dennis - I'm going to bathe your feet, son."

POST-MATCH THOUGHTS? The euphoria at the final whistle shouldn't mask the dire show in the first half. Lawrence aside, Dibs, Carey, Ferguson and the Edwardses were OK. Pejic, Whitley, Thomas, Armstrong, and Llewellyn - SUB-STANDARD! And a final thought - I don't know who the gentleman was who was distributing match tickets outside the away end, but Sir, I salute you.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Denis Smith: “If we continue to play like we did in the first half then we’ll get relegated! I was very happy to get in at the break without conceding a goal. The back three keep us in it and they played well after the break, but at least we started to pass the ball. We closed down better, much more than us! I have asked the players why we were so poor in the first half, because I can’t remember us being like that before and I can’t put a finger on it. Was the trip across? Was it the weather? I just don’t know. We lacked energy, but we don’t play like that. In the end we were launching it up field just to give us a rest at the back. The movement was poor, we weren’t getting hold of it up front, the midfield wasn’t tight and the only people to come out with any credit were the back three and Andy Dibble. The funny thing with Dibbs, was that for all their possession in that first 45 minutes, he had his best save to make late in the game! In the second half we had the better chances, besides the goal, and we should have got another one or two. Hector has once again rammed himself down my throat and that’s brilliant. He came on and was lively once again. Sometimes he passes at the right time and sometimes he doesn’t. One out of two passes he did right and Chris (Llewellyn) should have finished, but he offers us something different. Certainly something different at the moment – he scored!” [Source: Wrexham AFC]
