MATCH REPORT

WREXHAM AND CITY FIRE BLANKS IN RACECOURSE STALEMATE

By Mark Williams, Red Passion

Pre-match thoughts: Back to domestic football after the international break with two home games coming up against opposition that will probably give us an idea on how we will finish up this season.

Conditions: Sunny and warm for this time of the year

Sum up the performance in one sentence: Lacked cutting edge.

Turning point: Hector Sam lobbing the keeper and the bar midway through the first half.

Main incidents and goals:

0-15 minutes: A bit of a lively opening from both teams with Bristol City creating a couple of opportunities. The first came when Danny Coles evaded the challenge of the Wrexham midfield but he over hit his pass to Lee Miller, who would have been clean through on Dibble, and the ball went harmlessly out for a goal kick. Tinnion then swung over a free kick that Coles headed back across goal but Miller this time got a touch on the ball but could only guide it wide of the post. Wrexham were probing the visitor’s defence early on rather than creating any clear cut chances. Score 0-0.

15-30 minutes: Brian Carey had been struggling with flu during the week and could only last 17 minutes and had to be replaced by Craig Morgan. The best chance of the match fell to Hector Sam when he latched onto Llewellyn’s through ball that the City defence made a mess of. Sam noticed Steve Philips had strayed off his line but he could not execute his lob from 20 yards and the ball dropped over the bar rather than under. Sam was again in the thick of the action when he picked the ball up in the left channel. He cut back into the box and went down theatrically over the outstretched leg of Coles and it was no surprise that the ref waived play on. The only surprise was that Sam never got a deserved booking. Score 0-0.

Hector Sam: good opportunity

30-45 minutes: Wrexham started to exert some pressure on the game with Darren Ferguson spraying passes down the channels for the Wrexham forwards to run onto. With Wrexham starting to stretch the visitors they were getting joy down both flanks. Lee Jones sprayed in the ball from the right that was inches away from Sam to turn in and Wrexham went close again with a quick counter attack. Ferguson picked the ball up on the edge of his own area before playing it up to Lee Jones. He took the ball on 30 yards cutting into the centre before spreading it out perfectly to the feet of Carlos Edwards on the right. Edwards then switched channels delivering another perfect ball to Sam who crossed it back to Llewellyn who took it first time on the volley but couldn’t keep the ball down. More good build up play from Wrexham, who were now enjoying their best spell of the match, saw Ferguson go close with a drive from 20 yards that had Phillips beaten but also beat the post by a matter of inches. Half Time 0-0.

45 – 60 Minutes: Danny Wilson clearly got stuck into his players during the break and they started the half off with good possession. Bristol City had a couple of shots on goal through Peacock but the Wrexham defence blocked both efforts to advert the danger. With City having a lot of possession Wrexham almost caught them on the break. Sam collected the ball on the half way line and his pace exposed the visitor’s defence jinking past one defender before playing in Carlos Edwards down the right. I though Carlos could have taken the ball towards goal but he decided to cross high, rather than low, and this allowed City to clear the ball. Score 0-0.

No complaints really the fact was our defence was superb and so was there's.

60-75 minutes: Darren Ferguson then found Lee Jones with a ball over the top but after the striker took the ball down his left footed shot drifted wide across the face of goal. Dennis Lawrence then had a good opportunity to open the scoring following a corner that was only partially cleared to Carlos Edwards. The winger drove it low back into the box where the ball first evaded Hector Sam and then Dennis Lawrence failed to get any connection on the ball from close range as the visitors cleared the danger. Bristol City responded and went the closest all afternoon when a corner swung in from the right was headed onto the bar by Tony Butler. Score 0-0

75-90 minutes: Wrexham played through the motions in the final fifteen minutes and in the end everyday was grateful when the final whistle went. Although City had a lot of possession they failed to create any clear cut chances despite forcing corners at the death. Final Score 0-0.

Opposition and fans: Considering Bristol City was one of the favourites for promotion they lacked any real cutting edge. This could hamper their chances come next May. Fans in good voice but there was not as many of them compared to previous visits.

Officials: Had a good game and kept his cards in his pocket.

Man of the match: Hard to call but I would say Darren Ferguson just edged it.

If you were Denis Smith: Good effort today lads but we will be practising the final ball in training on Monday.

Post match thoughts: What a dull game. Bristol City came for the point they got and Wrexham again struggled up front. When we were promoted my main concern was our defence but so far they have coped well but surprisingly we have been firing blanks up front. No shots on target from either team says it all.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Denis Smith: "It was disappointing not to get a win, especially after dominating the first half. They packed the midfield in the second half and the game petered out. Before the season started you would settle to get a point from City, but we are disappointed."

Danny Wilson: "It was not a classic by any stretch of the imagination but it was a game of limited chances. We looked solid in the second half and looked like a side that was going to make it."
