MATCH REPORT

RACECOURSE STALEMATE

By Mark Williams, Red Passion Online

Pre-match thoughts: Looking for a pick me up from the Wales result in midweek.

Conditions: Dry and not too cold.

Sum up the performance in one sentence: Uninspiring but we still had the chances to take the win.

Turning point: Had to be the penalty miss by Sam.

Main incidents and goals:

0-15 minutes: A quiet start to the match with both teams failing to carve out any decent chances of note. The first incident was a booking for Scott Marshall after a late challenge on Chris Llewellyn. From the resulting free kick Darren Ferguson swung it in and Hector Sam attempted a strange diving header that he could not get on target. Brian Carey was struggling with the pace of Craig McSporran and for his second shirt pull on the attacker in as many minutes Carey ended up in the book for persistent infringement after just eleven minutes! Score 0-0.

We lacked everything that makes a match, no commitment, no pace, no willingness to challenge, no game plan, nothing.

15-30 minutes: Wycombe’s first chance came from the free kick that Dennis Lawrence cleared for a corner. From this the ball fell to Steve Brown but he could only find the back of the Kop and not the net! Chris Llewellyn was fed in with a long ball from Carlos Edwards but the striker’s low shot was saved well by Talia in the Wycombe goal. Score 0-0

30-45 minutes: Wrexham started to show some signs that they could break down the stubborn Wycombe defence with Carlos Edwards having a greater influence on the game as the half wore on. Sam took another through ball from Edwards in his path put his shot from the side of the area was parried by Talia before one of his defenders scrambled the ball clear. Another darting run from Carlos Edwards down the right almost created an opportunity for Hector Sam but the centre from Edwards was cut out by the Wycombe defence before Sam had the opportunity to pounce. Half time 0-0.

45-60 minutes: The opening stages of the second half totally eclipsed the whole of the first half for excitement as both teams started to create space and opportunities. The most noticeable tactical change from Wrexham was Darren Ferguson playing further up the field creating a link between midfield and attack. Wrexham were awarded a penalty within three minutes when Hector Sam was clearly pulled down in the area after he got ahead of the defender in an attempt to latch on to Paul Edwards’ inswinging cross from the left. Hector Sam’s strange, but in the past successful, technique of standing with his back to goal before turning a striking the ball eluded him as Talia guessed right and dived to his left to palm Sam’s spot kick away. In truth it was a poor kick from Sam that lacked any pace and was the perfect height for Talia to save. Moments later a purposeful run from Carlos Edwards ended up with a well struck shot that Talia managed to clear for a corner with his legs. Minutes later Wycombe broke down their left with a deep cross to the far post from McSporran was turned back towards goal by Roberts but Dibble defied his age with a superb reflex save to deny the visitors an opening goal. Another cross from the influential Carlos Edwards was deflected over by Andy Thompson although the defender did not have any control on his clearance and it just went over for a corner. Score 0-0

60-75 minutes: Jim Whitely then had the miss of the match following further good work from Carlos Edwards down the right. His weaving run ended up with him breaking to the area and he laid the ball back across goal on a plate for Whitley at the far post but unbelievably Whitley failed to get his left footed shot on target and the chance was lost. To make matters worse Whitley was only ten yards out when he made contact with the cross. Denis Smith made a couple of changes with Chris Armstrong replacing Hector Sam up front and Mark Jones came on for the uninspiring Paul Barrett. Jones was in the thick of the action and went down injured within about sixty seconds of coming on following a challenge on the edge of the box. Score still 0-0.

75-90 minutes: Wycombe rattled the cross bar with fifteen minutes left when a shot from outside of the area by Steve Brown with Andy Dibble rooted to the spot as the ball rebounded to safety. Craig Falconbridge, who left the Racecourse to advance his career with Wycombe (?), came on with eight minutes left to a chorus of boos and chants of ‘only one greedy bastard’. The changes had little impact of the game as the match played out for a goalless draw. Final score 0-0.

Opposition and fans: About 200 in total and could not hear any noise but what went on in front of them was uninspiring.

Officials: Had a decent game but there were a few strange decisions e.g. a clear handball by a Wycombe defender resulted in a free kick to Wycombe. Work that one out!

Man of the match: For some reason, probably alcohol, the sponsors gave the award to Brain Carey but Carlos Edwards was by far the best player on the pitch.

If you were Denis Smith: Practice on taking the chances created before the Brighton game.

Post match thoughts: Disappointed and a feeling of what might have been if we converted our chances. A bit similar to Wednesday night but at least we got a point out of it.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Denis Smith: “I’m disappointed that we have not won, but we needed to score a goal and had that opportunity - but spurned it. A goal would have changed the whole shape of the game. They were quite happy to sit behind the ball and chase chances. But if you miss penalties it will cost you. We have not looked as potent up front today, as we have in recent weeks. Hector has been superb for the last few games, but today he was back to the type of player that I’m not particularly a fan of! Looking at the positives, we have kept a cleansheet and okay we have been a bit more defensive, but we are hard to beat. Teams are coming here and giving us the kind of respect, which shows how far we have come. They are happy to settle for a point, rather than expecting to come here and win. They didn’t create us too many problems and when they did the defence dealt with those. You need two teams to create a classic game and that’s no disrespect to their tactics, as they have come here to do a job. But if you want an open game, then you need two teams who want to compete. Had we scored, then they would have had to come out and attack us. The longer we went without scoring, the happier they became. Hector is a good penalty taker, but then again van Nistelrooy missed three on the trot. These things happen and that’s the beauty of the game. I would have preferred it not to have been that way today, but if he had scored, then I think it would have been a different game.” [Source: Wrexham AFC]

Tony Adams: “This is the first in a building block that we hope to start developing in the steps to survival. At least this afternoon’s point is better than the result I achieved on my last Wrexham!” [Source: Wycombe Wanderers FC]
Tony Adams: "We are trying to lay down basic football principles and it will take time. I'd prefer to be playing out on the pitch but his is the next best thing." [Source: Nationwide Football]
