MATCH REPORT

By Alun Thomas

Pre-Match Thoughts? Wahey! It's an early-season top-of-the-table clash! Err...perhaps better make the most of it...........

Conditions? Fantastic stadium, thunderous support for both sides. In the chippie, pre-match, got talking to former Premiership referee John Key, a fanatical Wednesdayite. He reckoned the wide pitch suits Wednesday's style of play. Sadly for him, it suited Wrexham's better.

Sum up performance in one sentence? Of course, this is Wrexham, and we've all seen false dawns before, but if we can keep this up we might, just might, be on the verge of something very special.

Turning Point? Must be the half-time team talk! I don't know what Denis said, but it was mightily effective.

Main Incidents and Goals?
0-15 mins: The worst possible start. Our marking was non-existent as Alan Quinn's shot caught Dibble off his line. Wednesday looking dangerous with every attack. Kuqi right through but foiled by the Officer. Score 1-0.

15-30 mins: Wednesday "goal" disallowed. Pejic looking jaded after his midweek exertions. Llewellyn and Sam anonymous.

30-45 mins: Wrexham coming into the game more and on 40 minutes, just after I'd said "we never score from outswinging corners", Ferguson swung one out and Dennis "Top Scorer" Lawrence headed home unchallenged. Score 1-1.

45-60 mins: Tables turned with Wrexham spraying the ball about comfortably. Wednesday visibly wobbling. Llewellyn chose the 53rd minute to demonstrate his class, being involved in the build-up three or four times before sending a fulminating volley high into the net from 20 yards. Score 1-2.

60-75 mins: It was all Wrexham now and Carlos burst into the box where, despite the close attentions of three defenders and the goalkeeper, he kept his head to drill home a low shot. Score 1-3.

75-90 mins: Sam strutting his stuff, smile on face. Couple of Wednesday free-kicks miles over the bar. Very scrappy goal from the home side's Paul Smith made for a nail-biting last few minutes, especially with the dangerous Owusu on as a sub, but we hung on to go second in the league! Score 2-3.

Opposition and Fans? In the first half Wednesday looked like a team who knew they would only be slumming it in Division 2 for one season, but once on the back foot they were very vulnerable. 6/10. Their fans were noisy and supportive throughout - and friendly both before and after the game. 8/10.

Officials? No complaints - and no bookings.

Man of the Match? Paul Edwards was outstanding - ran hard and long and tackled like a train to nullify the threat of Wednesday's Derek Geary, but my vote goes to Andy Dibble, whose handling was faultless and whose crucial saves were fundamental to a famous victory.

If You Were DS? "We're a side that thrives on confidence, lads, and if we can continue to reproduce our second-half form then we can go places. We're a long way from the finished article but I'm not too unhappy at all".

Post-match Thoughts? What a day! What a result! What a team! What a manager!

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Denis Smith: "The lads showed good character, worked hard and there were flashes of brilliance. I thought we would come here and be under pressure, had we not then I would have been amazed. This is a massive club, but the pressure we are under is nothing compared to what they have here, as they are expected to win. We have conceded that first goal, after having a throw in and I hold my hands up for the one, as I wanted to do some work on just that following Saturday, but in the end we didn’t yesterday. I did though feel that we had the pace in our side to give them problems, while Dennis sis now top scorer with two in two games. We are always going to be a threat at set pieces, with Darren’s delivery and the two big men getting forward. I would have been happier if we had taken that other chance right on half time to come in 2-1, but to be honest we scored two great goals in the second half. I wasn’t particularly happy with my front two in the first half and they got told that at the break, but to be fair they responded in the manner that I wanted them to. Chris scored a great goal and that will lift some pressure off him, but he has to do that every week now, that’s how football is! They then put an extra striker on at 3-1, but once again I’m struggling to change things, as I look at my 18-year-olds. Even bringing on Shaun Holmes, meant I was using a player who hasn’t played a competitive game for a month! We knew it was going to be hard, but I’m delighted to get the result that we have. Although if the had won, then I can’t have turned round and say ‘we were robbed’! We got the ball down and held onto it better in the second half and had spells when we controlled the game. I know we are second in the table and I much prefer that than being at the bottom, but it doesn’t excite me too much, being their in May certainly would!" [Source: Wrexham AFC - Click here for more]

Chris Turner: "At half-time we should have been three or four goals up - we just didn't take the chances we were creating. Strikers moan and groan if you don't create chances - today we did but they didn't take them. If you're not creating chances you worry, but we created some great ones. I can't go out and buy a striker who is guaranteed to score 25 goals, we all know the financial situation. Having said that, Shefki Kuqi's had an excellent start to the season but today wasn't his day. If I can get teams to keep going out, play like that and finish the chances I'd be happy," he argued. "I know fans will be unhappy with losing the game, as I am. But nobody can deny we were adventurous, passed the ball around well and created opportunities that should have been taken. There are obviously things that need tightening up - we know about that. But for 35 minutes it was an excellent performance.  The players started over-playing and stopped doing the things that got us in front. I know the crowd love it but we shouldn't get the 'oles' until we're 4-0 up. We went hell for leather for the second goal, which we should have got. That was our seventh defeat in 26 matches. If we play that every week we won't be too far short and if the strikers take the chances we're creating there won't be any question about promotion come the end of the season."
