MATCH REPORT

Dragons see red against greens
By Wales on Sunday

WONDERFUL Wrexham ruined Second Division leaders Plymouth Argyle's centenary celebrations and relentless march to the First Division despite having two men sent off.

The first to go was teenage defender Craig Morgan with only 11 minutes gone in the second half, and he was followed in injury time by skipper Darren Ferguson, also dismissed for a second bookable offence.

Morgan went coolly and calmly, but Ferguson stormed down the tunnel protesting his innocence as nine-man Wrexham held the division's elite and gave themselves a chance of still being able to make the divisional play-offs.

The result clearly stunned a crowd of almost 13,000 and although Smith was delighted with the point, he will not be happy at having to face more suspensions in a squad hard-hit by injuries.

Wrexham were without key players at the back and in midfield. Craig Morgan had to come in at the heart of the defence for the injured Brian Carey and midfielder Paul Barrett had to replace hamstring victim Jim Whitley.

The whole team defended exceptionally well today from front to back (Llewellyn did an incredible amount of running) but Denis Lawrence was absolutely phenomenal

Wrexham were under some early pressure as Argyle got their game together, but a promising move was ruined when David Norris overhit his cross from the right.

But Argyle were clearly having the better of it for a while and Wrexham skipper Ferguson decided it was time to take things into his own hands.

Ferguson played a great ball through to striker Chris Llewellyn, but he just failed to connect with a diving header as Wrexham's confidence visibly grew.

A penetrating cross by Paul Connolly then caused some panic for Wrexham and Mike Ingham, on loan from Sunderland, looked to be impeded as he went for the ball, but the danger was cleared by Carlos Edwards.

Wrexham, by now, had settled into their rhythm and were giving as good as they were taking. Carlos Edwards delivered another good ball in from the right but nobody got on the end of it.

The busy Lowndes was booked for a foul on Morgan on the half-hour, but Wrexham must have been happy with their performance in the first half.

Wrexham had successfully nullified the threat of the Second Division leaders, so much so that Ingham had hardly a serious save to make for 45 minutes. The same could also be said of Luke McCormick at the other end, but the onus was on the Pilgrims before another bumper home crowd.

Lowndes put a head just over early on in the second-half, but Wrexham kept their shape and discipline.

Lowndes, however, always looked capable of getting a breakthrough goal, but Wrexham's thoughtful football always gave them a chance as well. At 0-0, it was always on a knife-edge but both sides lacked a cutting edge before that crucial sending-off of Morgan.

He was booked for the second time and shown a red card by referee Paul Taylor for another foul and soon after Ingham made an instinctive save to keep out a header from Mickey Evans.

Ferguson was also booked for what looked like dissent before David Friio fired over from 25-yards.

It was backs to the wall for Wrexham but they defended magnificently to keep Argyle out. Smith and his assistant, Kevin Russell, were having kittens on the touchline as their 10-man heroes battled grimly to stem the waves of attacks from green-shirted Argyle.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Denis Smith: “The work rate that the lads put in was phenomenal. The 2 wing-backs had to do so much defending, but it is actually disappointing that he have not won. Then to have 2 men sent-off – I’m not sure where I’m going to find anymore players from!! The referee has a bit of a history and he continued it again today! The performances we have given at QPR, Swindon, Cardiff and today is much more like us. This is the stage we you find out about ourselves and I quite like what I see. Now what we have got to do is continue it for however many games are left. I see the desire in the players and the great thing about the lads is they still believe that they have got a chance of getting into the play-offs. I thought Craig’s first booking was the best tackle of the game and did not warrant a yellow card. His second did because he body-checked the player. It had a bearing on the match because I thought we were coming back into the match before Craig was sent off. You just have to get on with it, but unfortunately, you get good and bad officials the same as you get good and bad players." [Source: Wrexham AFC]

Kevin Summerfield: “I think it’s a point gained, on the run of the game,” said Summerfield. “I think Wrexham thoroughly deserved the draw. I think it may have been a different outcome, had the lad not been sent off – we were under pressure at that time. It helped us, because they started the second half really well. We were lucky in that respect. They’ve got some good players, they really worked hard for each other, and they were a credit to Wrexham, to be fair. So, all in all, even though we had a lot of possession, I think it was a fair result. It was very similar to last week’s game at Luton, where we had the lion’s share of the play. We had most of the play first half, and never ever got in the right areas to pass the ball. Our movement in the box was ponderous, at best. We didn’t react to balls dropping, movement off each other - there’s going to be lots we can try and put right for next week. We didn’t create enough. We didn’t have that little bit of guile, that little bit of creativity, in the last third of the field. We had lots of possession, the full-backs had the ball virtually all day. When we did get it on the width, we were crossing from too deep. The only time we got in behind them was when Chuck got clear with a really good piece of play in the first half, and overhit it. That was symptomatic of our quality crossing of the day. It wasn’t good enough – the boys know it – we need to be better at it." [Source: Plymouth Argyle FC]
