MATCH REPORT

By Alun Thomas

PRE-MATCH THOUGHTS? We come off the back of an away win, albeit in the LDV, preceded by a heavy home defeat. Donny were crushed 5-0 last week but recently beat Ipswich here 2-0 in the League Cup.

CONDIITIONS? Not good for football. Blinding sunshine, strong wind.

SUM UP OUR PERFORMANCE IN ONE SENTENCE? We had a reserve goalie, no strikers and Steve Roberts hobbling. A point away and a clean sheet against a decent side. A definite plus.

TURNING POINT? Mmmmm?

MAIN INCIDENTS AND GOALS? Well, no goals for a start. Not enough incident to break down into fifteen-minute sessions, but - Sam injured twelve minutes in, several Donny near misses, weak punch from Baker (otherwise his handling was sound), clear Llewellyn chance, Roberts injured, Donny reduced to long-range shooting in the second period.

OPPOSITION AND FANS? Donny looked menacing in the first half, all big blokes with shaven heads or small peroxide blokes with white boots, and you could see why they've won back-to-back promotions. In the second half, however, they resorted to the long ball and a third promotion challenge may well be beyond them. 7/10. Fans - very vocal. 7/10.

OFFICIALS? Not impressed by the ref - some very odd decisions. To let play continue while Steve Roberts lay poleaxed, and then to delay Melvie's entrance, bordered on criminal negligence. However, the lino, asked to make three tight offside decisions in five minutes late on, was spot on each time.

MAN-OF-THE-MATCH? Darren Ferguson. I felt he was committed from the word go and his influence grew as the match wore on. Honourable mention for Carey and Baker.

IF YOU WERE DENIS SMITH? I'd be quietly satisfied, but on the phone to Stoke to see if Chris Greenacre (a proven goalscorer at this level, who seems out of favour at The Britannia) is available on loan.

POST-MATCH THOUGHTS? A decent, hard-earned away point. Worried about strikers, though. Once Hec had gone off we had no recognised strikers. We hardly won a ball in the air up front. Llewellyn. for all his hard running, has no physical presence or charisma. His opposite number, Leo Fortune-West, didn't break into a trot, never mind a sweat, yet looked threatening all game.

POST-MATCH THOUGHTS? Under the circs, not a bad result.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Denis Smith: "Having let 8 goals in in the last 3 games, we had to do something to stem the flow so what you saw from us today was not our usual selves but at least we stopped the rot. People have been having a go at the young keeper but once we get the stronger defence out all at once he hasn't got as much to do. I was pleased in the end and in the second half we were probably the better side having been poor for the first 30 minutes. But it wasn't one of those performances I'm going to remember. I took a gamble by leaving Shaun Pejic out, who has possibly been our best player during the last 2 games, so if it hadn't had worked people would have been pointing the finger. But it has so that's pleasing. I've options in defence, I've got some options in midfield but the problem is I've got no options up front - none at all! Dean Bennett worked hard and he had the 2 best chances in the second half. He should have done better with the header and there was a good block to deny him at the end but we didn't even get a corner for it. Izzy's worked his socks off alongside him as well. I've put Jim in at right wing-back to tighten things up and we have looked solid. They never really looked like they were going to open us up. Hector's damaged his knee but we don't know to what extent at the moment, hopefully it's not too bad because if it is we'll have to come up with another system. It is a problem because I've really only got 2 strikers and both have got injured." [Source: Wrexham AFC]

Dave Penney: "We just stopped playing the ball on the ground in the second half and the wind took the ball away from us. It always seems windy here for home games but you blame the result on that. We lacked the penetration it needed to break them down" [Source: Doncaster Rovers FC]
