THE OPPOSITION |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Swindon Town will be looking to
bounce back after last season’s disappointment of being defeated in the play
off semi final on penalties against Brighton who were eventually promoted to
the Championship. Manager Andy King has been quiet in the transfer market during the summer with only one player added to the squad when Jerel Ifil joined from Championship side Watford in a deal worth £70,000 after a loan spell last season. The biggest surprise was when experienced striker Tommy Moody left the club with the real shock being he dropped down to Division Two side Oxford on a free transfer after failing to agree terms at the County Ground. Defender Adrian Viveash has also joined Kidderminster on loan today (Friday). Swindon had a mixed pre season with respectable 2-1 home defeats against Southampton and Milwall but then lost a half time lead to lose 2-1 at Grays Athletic. They also enjoyed other wins over non-league teams. Sam Parkin is the danger man up front and has been the division’s top scorer for the last two seasons. Since joining Swindon in 2002 the 6 ft 2 striker has averaged above a goal every other game with 45 strikes in 81 league appearances. He will have a new partner this season after Tommy Mooney’s departure to Oxford with Rory Fallon looking to secure a permanent spot in the starting line up after being restricted to mainly substitution appearances last season. Fallon is positive going into the new season but admitted they require a bit of luck after the reduction in squad size. He told the Evening Gazette: “We have to be looking at the top six again. That’s our target. Once you get that sorted, you can talk about first and second. There’s no question that we need a bit of luck as well.” Club captain Matt Hewlett revealed that the atmosphere in the dressing room is positive despite the play off defeat last season. In an interview with the Evening Gazette he said: “Our recent record at Wrexham isn’t that good but what better time to improve it than the opening day of a new season? I think the feeling among the lads is one of optimism. I’m certainly feeling optimistic about the season. Yes, we’ve lost Tommy Mooney but the gaffer’s brought in one or two new faces to freshen things up.” |

Denis Smith revealed he is
excited going into the new season as he explained to the Evening Leader:
“I’ve got a lovely feeling in my stomach because everything is new. You
don’t know what is going to happen and that’s the real beauty of it. And
that’s what I like.” |

Wrexham Team News: Carlos
Edwards’ position on the right is likely to be filled by Jim Whitley and
Paul Edwards’ left wing position will go to Andy Holt this season. There is
unlikely to be changes in the defence with the familiar faces of Andy Dibble
in goal with a back three of Steve Roberts, Brian Carey and Dennis Lawrence.
With Jim Whitley likely to be pushed out to the wing Darren Ferguson will
most likely play as the creative midfielder with his usual holding role
taken up by Danny Williams and Alex Smith will complete the three. Hector
Sam impressed during pre season and last season’s top goal scorer will be
fighting for the final two places along with Chris Armstrong and Chris
Llewellyn. Apart from Carlos Edwards matt Crowell is the only other player
unavailable. |
