PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Denis Smith: "I said we were going to try and keep it tight! We played some super stuff for 70 minutes and then gave a silly second goal up which put us under pressure and the referee was conned for the third. That all makes it interesting for the second leg as a two goal lead is never safe, although I would have accepted it before the start. Some of the football that we played tonight was superb and Mark Jones in the first half was unplayable. Then on top of that Juan's finishing was top class. It looks like he's starting to get a good partnership going with Chris Llewellyn. Izzy has worked tremendously hard, pulling people and setting up chances. This morning, I didn't know my team, being stripped of two defenders in Steve Roberts and Danny Williams, so we ended up with a very young side out there. The likes of Craig Morgan, Mark Jones, Matt Crowell, Shaun Pejic and Ben Foster - they are all very young lads. There was a lot of inexperience out there, so I was delighted to come here and win." Brian Talbot: "The defending was unbelievable. Whatever players you pick, it doesn't really matter. If you defend like that, you're going to lose games of football. To score 3 at home and you lose 5-3, it's just unbelievable. I suppose they took their foot off the pedal. It was maybe a bit easier for them when they were 5-1 up. They think obviously they've won the game - they have won the game - but I suppose they relaxed a bit, so you could say that that was understandable for them. But there's no excuses for us. Whatever system you play, whatever players you play, if they're going to cut through you like that, I think you're going to lose games. They said it wasn't a penalty. I didn't know if it was a penalty or not - I couldn't see. Sometimes you get away with them, sometimes you don't- but I think we're clutching at straws. I don't think the tie's over, we've got a slight glimmer of hope. Obviously it if had of been 5-1 then it would have been over. When it was 5-1 you thought the worst. It's still not good- by a long stretch of the imagination. 5-3 at home is a poor result. You've got to go away and win 3-0 and it's a tall order - but who would have thought it would have been 5-3 tonight." [Source: Oldham Athletic FC]

YOUR VIEW

Prodigal Dragon: "5 fantastic goals, with possibly the Mark Jones one being the best; but Juan certainly did the business. Llewellyn needs to take a few lessons after his decision to run through the keeper rather than just hit it, when put clean through. Stadium-filler my elbow! Thought the interplay between Fergie and Mark was truly awesome. Normally it's either the forwards or midfield that take the day off; this time it was the defence. Carlos is trying too hard, and kept getting caught out; is there anyone out there who can defend Pejic after last night's performance; Morgan sauntered around, looking more like a granddad than a teenager; Dennis Lawrence made some terrible decisions, although was probably the best of a bad lot."

apeonauts: "I think conceding those two has been a psychological blow. Put it this way, if we had come from behind to win 5-3 we would have all been jumping for joy. Let's forget about the defensive mess towards the end. Neither Denis or the players will let that happen again in the second leg. We have a two goal advantage and they need to beat us 3-0 on our own patch. Any of us would have taken that before the game."
Obl: "Surreal experience. The only time I've ever seen us score 5 away from home and be desperate for the final whistle. When it went, the players almost trooped off, as if we'd lost... had we won the game 2-0, I suspect the celebs would have been a bit more frenzied. For an hour, Wrexham's attacking play was fantastic- in the period around the 2nd half blitz it was breathtaking. The worry was always the back line - would it hold firm... answer - no!"
sion wrexham: "What a great night! One of the best ever nights of football. We were superb going forward and i felt as if we were in heaven in that 20 minute spell in the second half - FANTASTIC. The best I've seen Wrexham play apart from the defending, ever! It was that good. Great atmosphere from the Wrexham end and last night just shows what a fantastic club Wrexham FC is. I was proud to be supporting the lads. Shame they scored 2 goals at the end but you can't have it all your own way..."
