MATCH REPORT

By Alun Thomas

PRE-MATCH THOUGHTS? We can win this, and need to. Hull's current form is poor, to say the least, and ours is reasonably good, culminating in that famous win on Tuesday night.

CONDITIONS? Bitterly cold, though not much wind. The pitch looks awfully threadbare, due partly no doubt to the groundshare agreement with Hull RFC.

SUM UP OUR PERFORMANCE IN ONE SENTENCE? Several enforced changes in personnel meant a collective offday, although it wasn't without a couple of plusses ; ultimately we were just the lesser of two largely disappointing sides.

TURNING POINT? Might just have been Armstrong's miss midway through the first half. The opening goal, as ever, is vital and had he scored things might have been very different.

MAIN INCIDENTS AND GOALS?

After a dreadfully scrappy start, we settled into some sort of a rhythm and were playing the better football. As at Hillsborough, we kept a large home crowd quiet without quite piercing Hull's defence in which Leon Cort never lost a ball in the air or on the ground.

The opener, when it came, was from a most unexpected source. Ben Foster, showing that he might, after all, be human, let a harmless header bounce off his chest and the predatory Allsopp pounced to score. The immutable law of the ex, as they say, though sadly it didn't apply to Holty today. But for the rest of the half normal service was resumed and we were still very much in the game at the break.

As ever, though, half time interfered with our flow and for a quarter of an hour or so we were seriously under the cosh - and we never really recovered. Just before the hour, the lino got just about his only decision of the half correct, and sadly it was to cost us. Big Price was offside but not interfering, the cross came over, was intelligently headed back and Aussie Allsopp, unmarked, drove emphatically past Foster.

Inevitably, Sam came on for Ugarte as the ineffective Armstrong, who by now had given up challenging Cort, remained on. Sam, who scored here earlier in the season in our League Cup triumph, looked lively as always and it was he who drilled home on 75 minutes to give the travelling support something to cheer. (The projected large travelling support didn't materialise today - I guess that many, like me, found two away games in five days too much of a strain on the pocket. I chose Hull rather than Oldham - big mistake).

Either side could have scored in the remaining quarter of an hour. A couple of goalmouth scrambles at the home end and Ferguson's fulminating, whisker-wide last-ditch effort from distance meant that, when all said and done, we are looking squarely at League Two next season.

OPPOSITION AND FANS? Frankly, Hull didn't look much better than they did when we beat them here in the League Cup, and I didn't think they were up to much then. In between, though, they must have got it right and will probably go up. Certainly the stadium is worthy of a higher division, although their fans are as fickle as anybody's.

OFFICIALS? The rotund Mr. Warren was fairly sound, I thought, although his assistants left a little to be desired. In the second half, one flagged our strikers offside nearly every time whilst the other missed too many Hull offsides for comfort.

MAN OF THE MATCH? Alex Smith stood out for me. He hasn't become an automatic choice this season, but today he was always available and never wasted possession - in other words, he did exactly what it says on the tin. Mark Jones impressed in flashes, and a word on behalf of Shaun Pejic - he has many critics, probably justifiably so, but he was solid and unspectacular today - just what you want in a centre-back.

IF YOU WERE DS? I'd be thinking : "At least it's never dull! I could be the first manager in the history of the game to win two cups, get relegated, go into administration, be docked ten points and still be in a job at the end of it!" The phlegmatic Mr. Smith, of course, will be thinking nothing of the sort........

POST-MATCH THOUGHTS? I did five aways on the pools. Four of them - Stoke, Luton, Sheffield Wednesday and Doncaster - did the business. Guess who didn't? Cheers lads.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Denis Smith: "These players deserve a pat on the back for even turning up today. In the dressing room before the game I was still not sure who would be playing, in fact, Juan is back there now laying down and suffering badly. That's the spirit we have at the moment and that will see us through. No matter what we get thrown at us, we are determined to get over it and stay up this season." [Source: Wrexham AFC]

Peter Taylor: "You're happier winning than drawing or losing and I'm pleased for the players because they've worked very, very hard for it. I think we created enough chances in the afternoon to win the match. It was a very nervous end. There's times where you just can't get the ball off Wrexham because of the system that they play. They play with extra bodies in the middle of the park and one of those players is Darren Ferguson who is an excellent footballer - and that's why they are difficult opponents. There's pressure on the players but there was pressure on the players at certain times last season and they always overcame it - and I think they did that today. They knew it was an important day. They knew we needed three points and I thought that we deserved it - I know that we had a nervous finish. I was disappointed with the goal that we conceded but over the 90 minutes I though we had some very good chances." [Source: Hull City FC]
Danny Allsopp: "It was nice to get two goals I could have had more really. It was good that we got the three points. We know we didn't play as well as what we can but we knew three points was the most important thing and that's what we got. The first was a bit of a scrappy goal in the six-yard box and I just managed to get a foot on it and knock it over the line. The second one Stu did well to knock it down to me. I tried to line up the volley and score that goal." [Source: Hull City FC]

YOUR VIEW
Welsh Wizzard: "Played some good stuff first half, Crowell in my opinion possibly had his best 45 mins of football in a red shirt. Holt at centre half did OK. Juan had a half chance that he dragged wide & Armstrong had a great chance when put through but volleyed wide. Looked like Foster may have spilled it for their first goal but other than that was once again very assured. His distribution, continually feeding Smith down the left was spot on. 2nd half we were not as good until Hector came on! We livened up with Sam on for Juan (who I think must have been under the weather) & Scott Green on at wingback (!) for Bennett who didn't do too much. Hector buried his goal, bottom corner with his left foot! & generally made a nuisance of himself. Once again he has done more in 20 minutes than 90 from Armo."

John Edwards: "The linesman was shocking, missed so many offsides, including one which led to the second goal. Also Pejic was fouled in the run-up as Elliott climbed all over him to head the ball back to Allsopp. Given those circumstances and the way we played, thought Wrexham definitely deserved a draw. Admittedly we caught Hull on an off-day but considering we had seven players out and others clearly not feeling 100% we were really unlucky."

Prodigal Dragon: "Although we did not get any points, everyone can be proud of the team's performance. With better refereeing we could have got a point, with a bit of luck we could have stolen all three. The pitch was in a bad state, which caused their first, when it bounced awkwardly and Foster made a rare mistake by not holding on to it. Their second was a clear foul on Bennett, as one of their guys had his hands on both his shoulders to win the header that knocked it back for Danny Allsopp's second."
