PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Denis Smith: "The way they play it is to knock balls in behind us and wait for a break. So I told the lads to keep passing it, but once the second half got underway, you couldn't really see them scoring. They did, which was disappointing due to the way we marked, but I've got a young central three who have not played together much. They got caught, but we responded by coming out and continued to pass it. It was a great ball from Morgan out to Holt, another great ball in, good control from Hector - 2-2! The third one was a joy to watch - pass, pass, pass. It ended up with Shaun Pejic knocking the ball square for Hector to put into the net. So Pej has scored one from a corner and got an assist. I was pleased with the corners working early on, as we didn't have Darren available, and with Brian and Dennis not playing, we have had to change the corner routines. They looked quite successful, so I'll have to keep trying to improvise a bit. We then got caught on the break, a little bit of a mistake by Jim, but generally although they had a lot of the ball and knocked a lit of the ball in, when the time came to score, I thought it was going to be us. Obviously they might have thought of it differently! Asked about Matt Baker coming into the side and conceding eight goals, was there any problem with his confidence? If you have spoken to Matt then you will now that he is an extremely confident person. Having said that, it doesn't do anyone any good conceding goals. Cleansheets is what we all thrive on, but then we look at Pej, who's a defender, but he's scored and also laid one on. Morgs has also laid one on! So there are two sides to football. There's the attacking one and the defensive side. Generally we have had the defensive side sorted, but when you see that we have lost the likes of Andy Dibble, Brian Carey and Dennis Lawrence, then you are asking an awful lot to replace those with the size of the squad that we've got. People won't slot in automatically, no matter how much you want it to. Young Morgs has got caught, but that's why they are there today, to learn and pick up experience. I thought Pej was immense again, so besides his contribution to a couple of our goals, his defensive header in the last minute was worth a goal to me. He's come on again this season compared to last, but we are expecting boys to do a man's job and that's not always fair. Mark Jones did a tremendous job, but there were a few little things that most people might not have noticed, but I did. So he still has to work on certain things. No doubt when I took him off at 2-1 down I might have been getting some flak from certain areas, but it worked and all at once it was a good substitution! We needed to win and after two defeats on the bounce I said to the lads I'm not used to losing three on the trot. I don't like it and it's not good for us. So credit to them as the lads have gone out and won, against a side that won 3-0 away from home at the weekend. Look around you, this is a big club! Going behind in the second half didn't seem to affect the team as a whole and they battled back. We have got character in the club and I keep saying it. We are a small squad, but we have a lot of people who will dig deep, rather than think 'oh well, it's not our day'. There are the odd one or two who I have a dig at once in a while, but the majority of the players will drive themselves on. What we were missing today was a little bit of experience at times. When to slow things down, when to speed them up and when to talk. But that will come - if we can hold onto the players for long enough!" [Source: Wrexham AFC]
