The Chairboys |
Wycombe's
goalless draw at Northampton in midweek consolidated their position at
the top of league two and the Chairboys go into February three points ahead of
Carlisle in second place. Wycombe have been the consistent team of the
season and by far one of the better teams to have played Wrexham when
we visited Adams Park in September only to return home on the end
of a 4-1 hammering. Nathan Tyson was the man in
form that day and despite his later sale to Nottingham Forest
for £675,000, the Chairboys' form has not dropped with the experienced
Tommy Moody leading their attacking line well with fourteen goals this
season. Wycombe's consistency has seen them hold the top spot in the
league for the last fifteen games and just edging Wrexham out for the
best home form in the league. Wycombe's away form is respectable as well
with their six wins on the road putting them in fifth spot in the away
league table.
Manager John Gorman, who has been in charge for just
over a year, has taken the opportunity to strengthen his squad during
the transfer window with four players arriving at Adams Park. Striker
Jermaine Easter has joined from bottom placed Stockport after eleven
goals in 23 starts after joining Stockport from Boston in the summer.
The fee for the striker was undisclosed but Wycombe had previously bid
£80,000 for the former Hartlepool and Cambridge player whilst Oxford had
a bid for £120,000 accepted.
Prior to the arrival of Easter, Wycombe had already
strengthened their attacking options with the signing of Ipswich striker
Dean Bowdidth on a three month loan whilst defender Adrian Collins
joined on loan from Ipswich along with Hull's keeper Matt Duke. |
Past Encounters |
The
teams last met in September with Wycombe comfortable 4-1 winners over
Wrexham. Goals from Tyson and Betsy had put Wycombe ahead at the break but
an early second half goal from Mark Jones had given Wrexham some hope of
salvaging a point. Wrexham could not build on the goal with further strikes
from Moody and Tyson putting the result beyond any doubt.
Prior to this game the teams last met in the 2003/04 season
with both games ending up in draws. The first encounter at the Racecourse
ended goalless and in the return game Chris Llewellyn equalised for
Wrexham with ten minutes left, a minute after Wycombe had opened the
scoring.
Since Wycombe's promotion to the Football League in the
1990s the teams have met on 19 occasions with Wycombe edging Wrexham with
six wins to five and there have been 8 draws. |

Despite being top of the league, Wycombe come into the game
on the back of three successive draws. The run started with a goalless draw
at Barnet, before they required a last minute goal to snatch a point against
bottom of the table Stockport. In midweek they returned from Northampton with a point courtesy of another goalless draw. Wycombe started
the year with an incredible 5-4 home defeat against Macclesfield but
followed this up with a 2-0 win over Notts County but since then have
recorded the three successive draws. Wrexham went
into the turn of the year on the back of defeat against Grimsby and this was
followed up with a further defeat at Shrewsbury. Robbie Foy, who has now
returned to Liverpool, scored an injury time equaliser to rescue a point
against Lincoln before Wrexham recorded their first win of 2006 with a 2-0
win at Rushden & Diamonds. In the last league match two weeks ago Wrexham
fell to their third home league defeat of the season against Leyton
Orient. |

Williams and Juan Ugarte forming a new partnership up front. Darren Ferguson
is back in the starting line up and will displace Alex Smith in midfield to
play alongside Mark Jones and Jim Whitley with Simon Spender and Andy Holt
as wing backs. After spending the second half as a makeshift striker, Dennis
Lawrence will return to the familiar surroundings of a three man defence
along with Shaun Pejic and Danny Williams with Michael Ingham continuing in
