Match Report

Easy start for Reds
By: Mark Williams

PRE-MATCH THOUGHTS? After all the problems last season it was important to get off to a new start especially with two successive away games coming up. Interesting to see how the new players fit in against a Boston side that have made high profile summer signings.

CONDITIONS? Sunny intervals and the temperature was just about right for summer football

SUM UP OUR PERFORMANCE IN ONE SENTENCE? Wrexham were dominant from the start with the midfield supporting the front two very well.

TURNING POINT? Kick off – Boston never had a look in with their first shot on target coming towards injury time.

MAIN INCIDENTS AND GOALS?

Wrexham started well without ever threatening the Boston goal although McEvilly did well to go past two defenders before his early shot was charged down. Both teams exchanged corners but the defences remained on top with the Wrexham back three looking composed against the experience of the Boston front two – Julian Joachim and Noel Whelan.

With the game heading into a lull it sprang back into life in the twenty third minute when Welsh under 21 international Mark Jones took Shaun Pejic’s pass in his stride and unleashed an unstoppable 25 yard right foot shot into the side netting of the far post with Boston keeper Abbey flapping at the ball.

The referee then took centre stage with Gary Lewis cautioning Danny Williams and Lee Cannoville for a scuffle on the edge of the Boston area when a ticking off would have been more appropriate. Mark Jones then stole the ball from Holland with a clever challenge but as he advanced away from the midfielder he was clipped on the ankle but it was Jones who went in the book for diving!

Wrexham continued their dominance in the second half and created more chances on goal as Boston had to play a more open game as they went in search for the equaliser. McEvilly had the ball in the net but was denied by the offside flag when he was played clean through and moments later the striker had another opportunity following good work from Mark Jones.

Jones picked the ball up in midfield before advancing to the edge of the area where he picked out McEvilly with a neat pass but the striker did not connect with his shot and scuffed it across the face of goal where Jon Walters was agonisingly close to converting it at the far post.

Walters then went close after Andy Holt dispossessed the Boston full back and lifted the ball into the path of Walters but the striker slipped at the wrong moment but still managed to lift his shot over the stranded Abbey only to see it strike the far post. The ball rebounded away from goal and despite McEvilly being close by the Boston defence regrouped to clear the danger.

Ferguson curled a 20 yard freekick around the wall that Abbey turned away for a corner but as the game entered the last ten minutes Wrexham got the second that killed of Boston’s slim hopes. Substitute Dean Bennett ran half the length of the pitch, turning four Boston players inside out, before squaring the ball to Lee Roche after the winger had cut into to the penalty spot and he made no mistake by blasting the ball past an exposed Abbey.

There was still time left for Boston to have their first shot on goal but Ingham went down at his near post to collect the wrong range shot from Danny Thomas.

OPPOSITION AND FANS? Poor showing from the Boston team that promised so much. Not the best sporting side either when from a restart after one of their players received treatment they did not play the ball back and made Wrexham defend a throw in deep in their own half.

OFFICIALS? Referee was OK to start with but set the standard for his own bad performance when he booked Mark Jones for diving after the midfielder was clipped from behind.

MAN OF THE MATCH? Mark Jones – on top of the stunning goal he was lively all game and put in a lot of hard work tracking back and made some good tackles.

IF YOU WERE DENIS SMITH? Pleased with starting the season in text book fashion with a cmfortable 2-0 win with goals in either half. The defence looked solid against an experienced strike force and the hard work offered by the strikers was encouraging as well as the support from midfield.

Denis Smith: "It was an excellent performance and I don't think the result flattered us in any way. I was also pleased that we kept a clean sheet. It would be unfair to expect us to play flowing football from the very first minute, certainly against a Boston side that were up for it, but once we settled we then started to achieve many of the things that we have been working on recently. I was also pleased that we forced them to change their pattern of play which I think was testimony to the way we played. I've said several times in pre-season that Mark Jones will be a key player for us this term and he demonstrated that today with a stunning strike. It was a match for his effort at Glentoran last week and I really feel he should go on to have a super season. With only 16 fit players, it was easy to pick the squad today but I did feel for Dean Bennett as he was unlucky not to start. That said when he came on he then made a fantastic run to set up Lee Roche's goal which effectively clinched the points. It was good for Lee to score that goal and I was pleased to see him up in the box at that late stage of the game. He showed tremendous energy levels to do that and got his just rewards. For me though, Dave Bayliss was the man of the match, especially considering their front two have attracted a lot of publicity this week. He stopped them getting through to Michael Ingham and so we had a relatively comfortable afternoon at the back. I have a lot of time for Jon Walters having followed his career because he is a quality player. He did well today and is somebody that I am delighted to have at the club. Whereas Lee McEvilly is a little more unknown to us, I feel his performances to date have shown that he is capable of scoring goals at this level. I have to finish by saying how delighted I was with the size of the crowd. Given the fact that so many people will be away on holiday at the moment, it was great to see over 4,500 here. They really got behind us and that is just the sort of support we need this season. Thankfully we gave them the best possible reward - three points."

Steve Evans: "There were a lot of nerves in the dressing room. We need to relax. There will be no rash decisions on players. We will get on to the training pitch on Monday ready for Wednesday's game at home to Shrewsbury. We'll do okay."
