The Opposition

Colin Calderwood: 3rd time lucky?
After failing in the play off semi finals for the past two seasons Northampton Town are fancied as favourites for automatic promotion this season. Following the single goal aggregate defeat to Southend back in May Calderwood was adamant that the Cobblers will bounce back. "This squad will be back next season and we will again have a motivation to do better,” he said. "There won't be many changes. The squad that ended the season is stronger than the one that started it."

Despite this statement Calderwood has had a busy summer in the transfer market with seven new signings including Ian Taylor from Derby and Eoin Jess from Nottingham Forest, whilst five players have left the Sixfields.

Northampton’s pre season included a training camp in Austria and an impressive 1-0 home win over Premiership side Birmingham City but what pleased Colin Calderwood the most was that the Cobblers failed to concede a goal in ten hours of pre season football.

The Opposition View

We catch up with Scott Hayman of NTFC Online for his views on the Cobblers and Saturday's game:

A 1-1 draw at Lincoln is a good start – what were your views on the opening game?

With a few players sitting this game out 1-1 was a pretty good result but it's obviously dissapointing to concede a goal after going 1-0 up. I am even more concerned after seeing a really poor 2nd half performance against Barnet that saw a below average side take all 3 points away from Sixfields.

What are your realistic expectations for the coming season?

The dreaded favourites tag has been placed on the Cobblers again but this time I am optimistic of automatic promotion. Some of the weaknesses of last season have been addressed through some experienced new signings so no excuses this year. A very poor start however is cause for concern only 2 games into the season.

How has pre season gone?

Pre season went well on the defensive front with the side going something like 10 hours without conceding a goal. Birmingham City were beaten 1-0 at Sixfields in the only home friendly.

What are your initial thoughts on the new signings?

Sean Dyche looked good in pre season but not so impressive so far now the season started, Eoin Jess and Ian Taylor should provide more experience to the side and with Andy Kirk arriving towards the end of last season the new signings are looking good.

What system do you play and have you noticed any changes from last season?

Last season the ball was played down the wing wherever possible with Josh Low being very influential when played, the new signings might encourage better football in other areas. The defence was careless on too many occasions aswell which unfortunately doesn't seem to have been addressed.

Your are one of the favourites this season but who will be you main threat?

Lincoln and Wrexham I see as the other 2 main contenders for the automatic spots.

What are Northampton’s strengths?
Northamptons strengths lie in goalscorer Andy Kirk (unfortunately injured) and plenty of experience in the side.

What are Northampton’s weaknesses?

The weakness seems to be the favorites tag which has the effect of everyone upping their game to beat us and so often it results in just that. So many teams come to Sixfields with the intention of a draw and snatching a goal on the break. If we can't deal with again this year it will be another failure. Versus Barnet the whole side just seemed to be all over the place, and no idea of how to stop a mediocre side from scoring.

Do you know much about the current Wrexham team?

I know Wrexham have a Trinidad and Tobago player but that's about it apart from being a good relegated side.

Finally, a score prediction?
Got to be optimistic 2-0 to the Cobblers, someone will kop it after the start we have had.
