The Stags |
Mansfield
manager Peter Shirtliff has challenged his players to record back to
back wins following the surprise 1-0 victory over league leaders Grimsby
in midweek. "It's been a good week with four points from two tough
games, Shirtliff explained to the BBC. "Now we have to regroup. It would
be nice to beat Wrexham as we've only got back-to-back wins once this
season." After hitting rock bottom of the table
earlier on in the season, Mansfield have steadily moved upwards and
currently lie five points and six places above the bottom two. The Stags
have won the games that counted this season with seven of their nine
league victories coming against teams in the bottom half of the table.
Mansfield's leading scorer is Richard Baker who has
found the back of the net on seventeen occasions this season. Goals in
his last two games for the former Rotherham striker ended a run of four
games without scoring. Baker joined the Stags in November 2004 after
previously enjoying spells at Brighton and Macclesfield before joining
Rotherham for £60,000.
There are doubts surrounding the future of the club
after chairman Keith Haslam put the club up for sale, inviting the
Supporters Trust, Team Mansfield, to make a bid for the club after fans
protested against Directors' Loans being taken out. Haslam confirmed that the
loans have since been repaid but over 600 fans attended a protest
meeting prior to their last home game against Macclesfield on 4th
February. |
Past Encounters |
The
teams last met in December when Wrexham ran out 4-1 winners at the
Racecourse. The result was mainly down to the second half performance after
Mansfield opened the scoring from the penalty spot but second half goals
from Danny Williams, Lee McEvilly, Jon Walters and Mark Jones wrapped up the
victory for Wrexham. Prior to this the
club's last met in five years ago in the first round of the League Cup and
despite Wrexham winning the first game away from home we went out on
aggregate courtesy of a 3-0 reverse at the Racecourse. The last league meeting was
in the 1991/92 season with both teams winning their home matches, Wrexham
3-2 and Mansfield 3-0.
The
clubs have met on 68 occasions with Mansfield leading the way on 29 wins
with Wrexham 6 behind on 23 and there have been 16 draws. |
