Match Report

Racecourse Stalemate
By: Mark Williams

PRE-MATCH THOUGHTS: Wrexham should be looking to build on their first away win last week although games against Posh are usually tight affairs.

CONDITIONS: Dry and sunny although the pitch in front of the PG Stand was covered in frost.

SUM UP OUR PERFORMANCE IN ONE SENTENCE: Good first half showing from Wrexham but they failed to take their chances and allowed Posh back in the game in the second half.

TURNING POINT: Wrexham should have been ahead by half time and this gave Peterborough the confidence to comeback into the game.

MAIN INCIDENTS AND GOALS:

Unchanged from last week Wrexham started the game brightly and should have been ahead within five minutes. A diagonal pass from Ferguson was headed back cross the area by Walters but the inrushing McEvilly scuffed his shot wide. Mark Jones then dispossessed a Posh midfielder and struck a left footed shot well from the edge of the area but Mark Tyler made a comfortable save, diving low to his left.

Peterborough’s chances were few and far between with Gain having his shot blocked by Bayliss in the fifteenth minute. Five minutes later Posh did put together a decent move with Thorpe heading Holden’s cross back for Hand but his volley flew over Ingham’s bar and into the Kop.

Darren FergusonDanny Williams then missed a sitter for Wrexham after Ferguson picked him out just beyond the back post but Williams could only place his shot across the face of goal despite only being six yards out.

Ferguson was having a big influence on the game and a ball inside the full back set Bennett bursting into the box but despite being on his favoured right foot the wide man had his shot blocked by a covering tackle from Sagi Burton.

As the game reached the half hour mark Ferguson picked out McEvilly from a free kick that the striker took down first time. Despite having is back to goal McEvilly was allowed to turn and sent in a rasping shot that required both hands from Tyler to tip the ball behind for a corner.

Ingham then made a comfortable near post save when Crow was allowed to cut in from the left but a minute before half time the visitors should have taken the lead. Crow and Williams were chasing back for the ball down the left channel but Williams was too weak when it mattered and was easily shrugged off the ball and left in a heap on the floor. Crow advanced into the area but Ingham made a good save with his legs and Bayliss cleared the danger with a long punt up field.

Sloppy defending at a corner, missed chances in the first half left us with a point

Have your say

The second half started in a much slower fashion with Peterborough playing closer attention to Ferguson and as a result his influence on the game reduced. It took at least ten minutes following the restart for the first chance when Walters cross was cut out by a good save from Tyler with McEvilly waiting for it at the back post.

Four minutes later and Wrexham were behind after they failed to clear the danger from a corner. In the build up to the goal Peterborough were starting to look dangerous and a corner was conceded by Roche following a good cross from the Peterborough right by Holden. When the corner was delivered in Wrexham failed to clear the danger and Crowe prodded the ball past Ingham and into the net.

Wrexham struck back with Mark Jones curling a shot from the edge of the area into the arms of Tyler but the shot lacked any power to trouble the Posh keeper, but ten minutes after the opening goal Wrexham were on level terms.

Mark JonesPeterborough allowed a Wrexham throw in on the left to be worked to Ferguson and as he travelled along the edge of the area he played a perfectly weighted inside pass for Mark Jones. It was brilliant vision from Ferguson and Jones timed his run to perfection and his low shot beet Tyler but struck the near post. Fortunately for Wrexham the ball rebounded across the face of goal and struck the rushing back Burton who could do nothing as the ball ended up in the net.

Walters and McEvilly continued to pressure the Peterborough defence but Wrexham played too many high balls to the front two. When they did get the ball down they looked dangerous and Ferguson almost pulled off a back heel for Walters on the edge of the area when he rushed onto Jones’ inside pass.

Michael Ingham was again accident prone by throwing a ball out that struck the back of Willock but the Posh substitute did not make the most of his gifted opportunity. The two teams exchanged free kicks at the end with McEvilly driving the ball into the wall for Wrexham and Hand curled his effort over the bar at the other end.

OPPOSITION AND FANS: Peterborough looked a solid unit and if they can find themselves a consistent striker they will be up there come the end of the season. About 150 fans made the trip from London Road but were relatively quiet.

OFFICIALS: Phil Joslin had a funny game. No one could argue about the bookings but his lack of understanding of the advantage rule was frustrating.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Darren Ferguson - all the chances came through Ferguson and when he tired off in the second half so did Wrexham.

IF YOU WERE DENIS SMITH: Should have been out of sight by half time with the chances we created but at least we are creating chances. A point is not bad after being a goal down against a well organised defence.

Match Reaction

Denis Smith: "The frustrating part of today's game was not scoring when we were on top. We had three chances, including one that Lee McEvilly should have put away, so to come off after 45 minutes with the score still 0-0 was frustrating. Second half was much more even, but I felt that we gave away a poor goal. Fair enough we've got ourselves back into the match and strangely enough just at a time when I was looking to bring on Robbie Foy. I did sit him down to see if the goal lifted us and I felt that we did go for the win at the end. The only trouble with doing that is it leaves you exposes in defence. Okay, Lee McEvilly should have scored early on today but he works his socks off for us. He always looks like scoring, so I've no complaints. Over the two games against Peterborough we've found them a hard side to breakdown and difficult to play against. We are at a strange part of the season, as fans start to get frustrated if you are not near the top, but if you are top they expect you to gone on and win the League. There is a long way to go in the campaign, so I want us to stay focused on the job in hand. We look like we are starting to get players fit again and if we can do that then I'm looking forward to seeing how good this team can really become." [Source: Wrexham AFC - click here for more]

Mark Wright: "The boys were up at 6am to travel because we couldn't stay overnight and that's a long day for them. I'm not making excuses, but they looked as if they were still in the coach in the first half. Certainly in the second half we took the game to them and did the things I wanted. Wrexham really had the better of it in the first half. In the second half we certainly did and I think we could have won the game. He's (McEvilly) one of those players you'd want in your side because he's got a physical presence, he gets after people and lets you know you've been in a match. I've got a lot of time for him and when we heard he was leaving Rochdale even we enquired about him. Denis (Smith) has got some good players, Wrexham are a good side and you can see why they've been so strong at home. They are a very, very confident side here, so to bounce back at a hard place like this is a major plus for us." [Source: Daily Post]
