The Quakers |
Darlington
manager Dave Hodgson was proud of his players after they overturned a
1-0 half time deficit to run out 3-1 winners against Cheltenham last
weekend. "I was really proud of them in the
second half, the Quakers boss told BBC Sport. "I told them to pull
together, lift the tempo, play with some pride and win the game, because
I knew they could do it. The only concern was when we went 2-1 up and we
were starting to go a bit flat again, but we deserved our victory in the
second half."
This victory came on the back of two away defeats at
Bury in the league and Conference side Kidderminster in the LDV Vans
Trophy, where Hodgson was less than complimentary about his side's
display.
The Quakers are on a look out for a loan striker after the
club terminated the contract of ex-Leeds player Clive Wijhard this month
and the striker has subsequently joined fellow League 2 side
Macclesfield. The contract was terminated after a number of breaches of
the club's rules but Hodgson is yet to have signed a replacement.
Hodgson has strengthened his midfield since the season
started with the signing of former Middlesbrough player Phil Stamp after
the player was out-of-contract having been released by Hearts in the
summer. Speaking of his new signing, the Quakers boss said: "He'll bring
some added experience to our side. He has played at the highest level
and did have offers to remain at that level, but was committed to
returning to the North-East."
Darlington's top scorer is Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu with
five goals and he is closely followed by Akpo Sodje on four.
Ndumbu-Nsungu joined in a free transfer move from Sheffield Wednesday
just before the season started and after scoring three early goals he
went six games without scoring although he has scored twice in as many
games.
Two ex Wrexham players are in the Darlington squad
with Neil Wainwright and Steve Thomas returning to the Racecourse.
Thomas is struggling to win a starting place and has been a substitute in recent games but Wainwright has been a regular starter on
the wing. |
Past Encounters |
The
two teams last met when Wrexham were in the basement league three seasons
ago along with a match in the FA Cup. Honours were shared with each team
winning once and there was a goalless draw at the Racecourse in the league. Wrexham
won the first encounter courtesy of an first half goal from Andy Morrell but
Darlington got their revenge winning 2-0 at the Racecourse in the FA Cup
courtesy of two second half goals. Prior to this the last time the teams met
was in the 1992/93 season.
You cannot split the head-to-head either as in the 88 games played both teams have won 32 with the other 24 games ending in
draws. |

Darlington currently find themselves above Wrexham in the
table but like the Red Dragons they have won only twice in their last eight
games and coincidentally both have been at home. A run of six games without
victory was ended with a 1-0 win over Macclesfield at home but this was then
followed up with defeats on the road at Bury in the league and then at
Kidderminster in the LDV Vans Trophy. Darlington returned home last weekend
and overturned a half time deficit to see off Cheltenham but Darlington visit
the Racecourse with only one win away from home.
Wrexham have only recorded two victories in their last eight
games although they should be going into this game with four
wins in five games but poor defending at Blackpool and Bristol Rovers resulted in
Wrexham throwing away leading positions by conceding late goals in both
games. To prove football is a funny old game Wrexham then scored a late
equaliser to snatch a point and Peterborough in midweek. The two wins have
both come at home with Stockport and Torquay despatched with ease at the
Racecourse. |
Bookies View |
Wrexham's home form sees them favourites with
the Bookies and the best price is 6/5 with Stan James. The away win is at
11/4 with Ladbrokes and Sky bet with VC Bet, UK Betting, Paddy Power, Bet
365, Total Bet, The Gaming Club, Sky Bet, Tote Sport and Centrebet all
offering the draw at 9/4. |
Team News |
Wrexham Team News:
Wrexham will be without top scorer Mark Jones for the game as the midfielder
sits out due to a one game ban for collecting five bookings this season. He
will join the injured Juan Ugarte, Dean Bennett, Shaun Pejic, Jim Whitley
and Paul Wahurst, who has picked up a groin strain, on the sidelines and there are doubts over Robbie Foy
who has a dead leg. Foy will
have a fitness test on Saturday morning but on the plus side Lee Roche and
Matt Crowell came through a midweek reserve game without any problems.
Michael Ingham starts in goal and they only options at the
back are Dennis Lawrence, Dave Bayliss and Andy Holt. It may be too early
for Lee Roche to start from the off with Simon Spender or possibly Robbie
Foy taking the right wing back position although Matt Crowell may make his
first start of the season in midfield due to Mark Jones' suspension. Levi
Mackin is the other option in the squad to team up with Danny Williams and
Darren Ferguson in midfield as Alex Smith will be at left wing back as Andy
Holt is required in defence. Up front Lee McEvilly is set to continue his
partnership with Jon Walters.
Wrexham Squad (18): Ingham, Michael Jones, Roche, Lawrence, Bayliss,
Holt, Smith, Williams, Done, Ferguson, Walters, Foy, Mackin, Reed, Spender,
McEvilly, Crowell, Warhurst.
Darlington Team News: Darlington welcome David Duke back into
contention after the midfielder's recovery from an ankle injury. Carlos
Logan (ankle) is doubtful while Phil Stamp is pushing for a place.
Officials: The match referee is Garry Sutton from Lincolnshire and he
is assisted by Russell Green and Tony Horton with Eddie Tarry as fourth
official. Garry Sutton has refereed 12 games this season sending off 3
players but only booking 18 at an average of 1.5 per game. |
