Wycombe Wanderers

v Wrexham

Saturday 05 August 2006

Kick Off @ 15:00

The Match

Thank god for that, the one month wait between the World Cup is over and the men in suits at the Premier League have decided we can play in the Football League this season. With the good news over, its time for some bad: the corresponding game last year was the scene of our heaviest defeat as we were on the wrong end of a 4-1 score line following a wet night in late September.

After only three away wins in the league last season, and two of them were against the teams who were relegated, then we certainly have to improve in this area to get out of League 2. Therefore, we could not of asked for a more difficult start with a game at a team who missed out in the play offs last season.

The Chairboys

Paul LambertThis season it is all change at the Cuaseway, including the ground name back to Adams Park, with John Gorman leaving the club following the play off semi-final defeat to Cheltenham, although he has since found new employment at promoted Northampton Town in League One.

Former Scottish international Paul Lambert has taken charge of the Chairboys and there cannot be many managers in the lower leagues with a Champions League winners medal to their name after the former Celtic midfield was part of the Borussia Dortmund team that defeated Juventus in the 1997 final. This is not the first managerial appointment for the 36 year old former Scottish international, as he had a short stint in charge of Livingston last season but he left in February with Livi six points adrift of safety in the Scottish Premier League.

Paul Lambert has been busy in the transfer market since his arrival at the beginning of July and with Anthony Grant arriving from Chelsea in a season long loan. Also to arrive for the new season is Chris Palmer from Notts County and Sam Stockley from Colchester whilst Fulham goalkeeper Ricardo Baptisa has joined in a five month loan move this week as replacement for the injured Frank Talia.

Experienced striker Tommy Moody has been made club captain for the season and he will be looking for a good return this season after banging in 19 goals last time around. Moody will most likely be partnered up front by Jermaine Easter.

The most noticeable absentees from last season are Robert Lee who has retired and Roger Johnson has joined Cardiff in a £275,000 deal.

Past Encounters

Juan UgarteLast season the two games went the way of the home teams with Wrexham running out 2-0 winners at the Racecourse but the Red Dragons were on the wrong end of a 4-1 hammering at Wycombe. Early goals from Dennis Lawrence and on loan Sam Williams were the catalyst for the home win but a Mark Jones strike at Wycombe early in the second half proved only to be a consolation in the away game.

The clubs have met on 20 occasions in the league with both teams on six wins each and their have been eight draws.

Form Guide

Wycombe's only home fixture during pre season was against Premiership new comers Watford with the hornets running out 3-2 winners in a closely thought game. There was only one home fixture was to allow the pitch to repair and six away games were also scheduled in at non league opposition of varying standards.

Thank god friendlies count for nothing come the start of the season after the 5-0 mauling at Port Vale in our final warm up game. Pre season started with money spinning friendlies home against Liverpool and Man City with a 2-0 defeat and a 3-3 draw recorded respectively. A trip to Northern Ireland resulted in a 3-0 win against Dungannon and a goalless draw against Cliftonville.

Turn right at the next roundabout into Hillbottom Road and continue through the Industrial Estate to the ground at the end.

SEVERE TRAFFIC DELAYS UPON LEAVING THE M40: Wycombe have been warning supporters to expect severe delays upon leaving the M40, as the A4010 is scheduled to be closed. Diversion will be in place

When you are there
Car Parking: The ground has limited parking but your best bet is to park in the numerous spaces on the Industrial Estate at a small price. Do not leave any valuables on show as the car parks are not secure and be prepared for a delay leaving the game as their is only one road out of the industrial estate.

Beer and Grub: As the ground is on an industrial estate in the past there has been no options at the ground but busy bodies at the council have closed the beer tent for away fans at the ground this season. The nearest pub is The Hour Glass on Chapel Lane but this is over a mile from the ground. The pub lets in away fans at the doorman's discretion and food is usually served although there is a chip shop a further down the road. If you are after a bite to eat then after leaving the M40 you will notice a Hungry Horse pub located off the third roundabout in the directions above.

Cash Machines: None that do not charge nearby.
