Torquay United

v Wrexham

Kick Off @ 19:45

The Gulls

There was a surprise managerial change last week at Plainmoor with Ian Atkins replaced by former Czech international Lubos Kubik. Defender Kubik is a veteran of the 1990 World Cup and Euro 96 and is a friend of Torquay Chairman Chris Roberts and his first game in charge was the 1-1 draw at home to Orient in the cup on the weekend.

The move for Kubik came as a shock to Atkins who has since left the club after turning down the position of Director of Football. Atkins arrived at Plainmoor in April with Torquay looking destined for life in non league football but he guided them to safety and away from the relegation zone but the Gulls have once again struggled this season. They are a point and a place above the relegation zone with a return of 18 points from 19 games under the guidance of Atkins.

Chairman Chris Roberts, who only took over the position in October, was also in the news during November when he confirmed that the club have introduced a disciplinary procedure for any player adjudged to have dived or feigned injury. The procedure starts with a caution, followed up with a fine and final warning with a player transfer listed or released for a third offence.

Torquay have so far won two out of their eight home games this season with 5 defeats and 3 draws although the Gulls have now gone ten games without a win in the league with three of their last four home games ending in defeat.

Wrexham will come up against summer transfer target Jamie Ward and he is the Gulls top goal scorer with a return of eight goals from eighteen games. Denis Smith was chasing the former Aston Villa winger but since his arrival at Torquay he has been playing up front.

Jon Walters got the scoring underway and Dean Bennett grabbed a crucial second goal on the stroke of half time. Simon Spender made it 3-0 within four minutes of the restart and although Torquay pulled a goal back, Jon Walters' second strike made the game safe with Torquay grabbing a consolation late on.

The two clubs have only ever met in the league and in the 32 games played, Wrexham just edge it with 14 wins against Torquay's 13 and there have been 5 draws.

How to get there?

By Car: Leave the M5 when it ends and join the A38. After three miles leave the A38 take the left hand fork onto the A380 following signs for Torquay and Torbay and continue on the A380 through the village of Newton Abbott going straight on at the roundabout by the Penn Inn. Then pass through Kingskerswell and continue straight on at the second roundabout. The road then becomes a dual carriageway and after passing through two sets of lights take left hand lanes to turn left at the third following signs for Torquay United FC. The route is signposted from here but from Hele Road carry on straight across the roundabout through the village of Helle and continue straight over 2 mini-roundabouts into Westhill  Road. After travelling up the hill go straight on at the lights into Warbro Road and Plainmoor will be ahead of you on your right hand side. (Time = 5 hours; Distance = 250 miles)

By Train: Nearest Train Station is Torquay but is over 2 miles away from the ground (uphill!) so the best bet is to jump in a taxi costing around £5.00 or catch a number 12 bus to the town centre bus station and then a number 34 to the ground. Click here for the Rail Track Online Timetable or call national enquiries on 08457 484950.

Car Parking: There is no parking at the ground so street parking in the vicinity is the only option. The nearest car park can be found from the crossroads of Westhill Road, Warbro Road, St Marychurch Road and Manor Road where you take Manor Road and the car park will be visible after 0.25 miles.

Beer and Grub: There are plenty of pubs in the town centre but the best bet is the Boots & Laces at the ground where away fans are welcome. Other recommended outlets are O'Connors and The George Inn on Babbacombe Road is only ten minutes away and welcomes away supporters. Next to the George Inn is a fish and chip shop that has won national awards. Inside the ground the catering is of good standard where value for money is assured with the size of the servings.

Cash Machines: There are three cash machines on St Marychurch road. stay away from the Spar shop as the Securicor machine will charge a £1.50 handling fee. The best bet is Somerfields where you will find a Halifax and Lloyds TSB machine.
