Macclesfield Town

v Wrexham

Saturday 07 April 2007

Kick Off @ 15:00

The Match

The first of the three pointers out of our remaining games is realistically a do not lose, otherwise Macclesfield will sit five points head of the table after Bury have opened a six point gap following two straight wins.

The Silkmen

Paul InceWhen Paul Ince took charge of Macclesfield back in October the Silkmen looked doomed to Conference Football next season.

Following a poor start to the season, which cost Brian Horton his job, Macclesfield were without a win in 16 games with just five points but since then they have picked up 10 wins out of 23 games to leave the Silkmen two points and a place above us in the table.

Macclesfield had a week off last weekend courtesy of Bristol Rovers playing in the Johnstones Paint Trophy Final and this meant they dropped down one place to 21st position but, like us, they now have a game in hand on teams down the bottom towards the end of April.

Due to the poor start to the season, Macclesfield are ranked 19th overall in the home league although they have only lost once at Moss Rose since November when promotion chasing Walsall went home with a 2-0 victory at the end of January. The last game at home ended up in a 2-2 draw against Shrewsbury although it was two points dropped for the Silkmen as they held a 2-0 lead after an hour of the game.

Top goal scorer for Macclesfield is former Chester midfielder Kevin McIntyre with 10 goals this season with his last one a crucial ninetieth minute equaliser from the spot in the one-one draw at rivals Bury two games ago.

The last match at the Racecourse back in November last year ended goalless with our last win against the Silkmen coming back in the 2001/02 season. This was also our last win at Moss Rose when Hector Sam grabbed the only goal of the game in August 2001.

We looked to be on course for three points at Moss Rose last season when

Danny Williams and Andy Holt put us two-nil up but a Holt own goal just before half time proved crucial. The Silkmen thought back to equalise before securing all three points with a winner in the last ten minutes.

With Macclesfield only joining the league in the 1990s there have only been seven league encounters between the sides. Wrexham just edge the Silkmen by three wins to two with the other two matches ending in draws.
