Wrexham v

First Round

Stevenage Borough

Saturday 11 November 2006

Kick Off @ 15:00

The Boro

Stevenage just missed out on a final play off position last season and prior to this they ended the previous campaigns in 5th and 8th positions. The year Stevenage finished fifth they made it through to the play off final after defeating Hereford in the semis but they lost to Carlisle by the single goal in front of 13,000 spectators. Compared to previous seasons, Stevenage have made a slower start to the season and currently find themselves in 16th position with 19 points from 18 games.

The man in charge at Broadhall Way is Mark Stimson and he replaced Graham Westley after Stevenage failed to make the Conference play offs last season. Stimson arrived from Conference rivals Grays Athletic a week before the season started and after a lot of players were given free transfers following the disappointing end to last season.

Stevenage will have Tony Thorpe available after the experienced striker returned from a loan spell at Grimsby last week after the both clubs failed to agree any extension to Thorpe's one month stay at Blundell Park. Thorpe played six games without scoring in the month after only playing once for Boro since his move from Colchester in July.

Earlier on in October, Stevenage allowed striker Darryn Stamp and midfielder Jason Goodliffe to join fellow Conference side York in three and two month loan deals respectively. The move for Stamp looks a surprising one by the Broadhall Way Club after the striker registered 26 goals in only 52 Conference games.

Top goal scorer for Stevenage is Steve Morison and he has already scored twelve times this season in all competitions and this is two more than Wrexham's joint top scorers combined. Morrison joined Boro in the summer from Hertfordshire rivals Bishop Stortford after previously playing for Northampton Town in the Football league and has continued his impressive scoring record at his new club.

League Form Guide

Team Last 5 Games League Position Last Win
Wrexham LLWDL 20th (Lge 2) 3 games
Stevenage DWLLL 16th (Conf) 4 games

Boro are currently on a run of three successive league defeats after they lost a one goal lead at Burton Albion to lose 2-1 despite Burton having a man sent off after 18 minutes. Their recent run started with a 2-2 draw at Rushden & Diamonds and the only victory in the last five games followed this with a 2-1 win at Southport. A run of three straight defeats started against Dagenham & Redbridge and then Nortwhich, with the defeat against Burton coming on the back of a 4-1 over Forest green in the final qualifying round for the FA Cup.

Wrexham's recent form is slightly better than Stevenage and are unbeaten in their last two home games with no goals conceded courtesy of a 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers and a goalless draw against Macclesfield. Prior to this, Wrexham lost at home to MK Dons and away to Mansfield and the mini improvement in form was ended with a 1-0 defeat at Bury in midweek.

Team News

Wrexham Team News: Wrexham's injury problems continue with Ryan Valentine and Jon Newby the latest players to have a spell on the sidelines. Valentine has failed to recover form a groin strain that forced him to miss the second half at Bury where as Newby pulled his hamstring late on in the same game. Lee Roche will likely replace Valentine at right back and the good news is that Darren Ferguson has recovered from illness and loan strikers Kevin Smith and Maheta Molango are allowed to play. Wrexham are without Chris Llewellyn, who sits out the final game of his three match ban, as Wrexham remain without Neil Roberts, Juan Ugarte, Lee McEvilly and Tom Craddock. Craig Morgan's loan spell has now ended but Marc Williams is back in the squad after returning from in international duty with Wales under 21s.

Stevenage Team News:
Stevenage manager Mark Stimson has no fresh injury worries and has Tony Thorpe available for selection after the striker returned from a month's loan at League 2 Grimsby.

How to get there?

By Car: Leave the M6 at Junction 10a to join the M54 and continue on this road as it becomes the A5 past Shrewsbury and Oswestry. When you reach Oswestry turn right at the roundabout (An ESSO Service Station will be on your left), staying on the A5. Continue straight through the series of roundabouts to join the A483 and leave this road at junction ?. At the roundabout turn right towards Wrexham and after going straight over the next roundabout the ground is ahead of you on your left.

By Train: Wrexham General is next to the ground and there is a service every two hours between Chester and Shrewsbury. There is also an hourly service between Wrexham and Liverpool. Click here for the Rail Track Online Timetable or call national enquiries on 08457 484950.

When you are there
Car Parking: NEWI College just before the ground and a local car park just before the Shell Garage on the opposite side of the road and both cost around £2.00. Free parking is available on the retail parks by turning left at the second roundabout but do not park in ALDI or you will get clamped! Avoid B&Q as they have a maximum stay of two hours and issue parking tickets for £125 and the new Central Retail park just passed the train station operates a time restriction policy.

Beer and Grub: The Turf is right next to the Kop but it gets very busy in the hour leading up to kick off, so arrive early. The Official Supporters Club has use of the Centenary Club on matchdays and this is located behind the Sainsburys Stand with the entrance off the club car park. The Plas Coch Retail Park has a pub and is normally a favourite for away supporters. The Railway is located down the side road along the Remploy factory at the opposite end of Crispin Lane to the ground. There are plenty of pubs in the town centre and the closet to the ground is a Wetherspoons Pub by following Mold Road into the town centre and is found on your left hand side. If you continue into the town centre McDonalds will be on your left and the next pub you reach is The Horse and Jockey and opposite that under the archway is a good chip shop. There are more pubs on High Street and to find them continue pass the Horse and Jockey, passing Burger King on your left, and High Street is the junction with Burtons.

Cash Machines: The Shell Garage on Mold Road with further machines at Sainsburys and Boots on the Plas Coch Retail Park. If you are heading into the town centre you will pass a number of banks on your way to the pubs.
