Swindon Town

v Wrexham

Saturday 13 January 2007

Kick Off @ 15:00

The Robins

Paul SturrockAfter making a 100% start to the season, which was ended by Wrexham back in September, Swindon have endured an unsettled time since then with the management team of Denis Wise and Gus Poyet departing to take charge of Championship strugglers Leeds United.

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Paul Sturrock took charge of the club at the beginning of November after being sacked by the Owls in mid September. Paul Sturrock was in charge of Wednesday when Wrexham knocked them out of the Carling Cup with a 4-1 win at Hillsborough in August and this seams light years a go for Wrexham fans following the events of this week.

Swindon currently occupy fourth spot in the league with a return of 52 points from 26 games. Swindon have the fifth best home record in league two with 8 wins from 13 games and there have been 2 draws and 3 defeats, although the last one was to Hereford at the beginning of November.

Christian RobertsSwindon have been busy during the transfer window and this week agreed a fee with Crewe for Luke Rogers although the former Shrewsbury striker has turned the move down. Last week Michael Timlin extended his loan deal from Premiership side Fulham but winger Andy Monkhouse had headed for Hartlepool in a permanent deal following a successful loan spell. Fola Onibuje has also joined League 2 rivals Wycombe after the striker netted twice for Swindon this season.

Top goal scorer for Swindon is Welsh born striker Christian Roberts with nine goals this season although his last strike was over a month a go. Roberts joined Swindon in a £20,000 move from Bristol City in 2004 after previously having spells at his hometown club Cardiff and also Exeter City.

Off the field is uncertain at the moment with the board requesting that the current owners of the club bail out the Robins financially in November. When they exited administration they agreed to pay creditors £1m over five years but missed and deferred a £100k payment from June. Last month, they have received a takeover bid from a fan's consortium that will possibly involve a move away from their County Ground to Chippenham, which is outside of Swindon.

How to get there?

By Car: Head south on the A483, A5 towards Shrewsbury and then onto the M54. Continue to the end of the M54 and then join the M6 southbound at junction 10a. Leave the M6 at junction 8 joining the M5 southbound until you reach junction 11a where you leave the M5 turning left at the end of the slip road onto the A417. At the roundabout with the A436 turn right continuing on the A417 towards Cheltenham. After 15 miles on the A417 go straight on at the roundabout onto the A419 heading towards Swindon WARNING - THERE ARE SPEED CAMERAS AT THE TOP OF THE STEEP HILL AT BLUNSDON. Half a mile after Blunsdon turn right at the Turnpike roundabout (there are a lot of these in Swindon!) onto the A4311. Continue on this road towards Swindon and go through numerous roundabouts until you reach one called Transfer Bridges. From here turn left following signs for the County ground and Swindon centre. After passing under the railway bridge you will reach another roundabout where you take the second exit into County Road (signposted County Ground and Swindon Centre) and the ground will be on your left after the next, wait for it, mini roundabout! Distance - 150 miles; Time = 3 hours 30 minutes.

By Train: Swindon station is within walkable distance and will take you around 10-15 minutes. On leaving the station cross the road and head between two pubs called the Great Western and Queen's Tap. At the end of this road turn left onto Manchester Road and walk through a set of traffic lights. At the end of this road turn right and the County ground is 300 yards up this road on your left. A taxi ride would set you back around £5.00 or you can catch a bus from the town centre as follows: nos.1 and 1a run from Bus Stop Q, and 13 and 15 from Bus Stop S. Click here for the Rail Track Online Timetable or call national enquiries on 08457 484950.

When you are there
Car Parking: There is parking available at the ground if you arrive early. Alternatively you can park at the cricket ground signposted off County Road. St Joseph's School by the ground charge £3.00 and is located opposite Burger King. To find in continue along County Road until you reach the Magic Roundabout - this is a large roundabout surrounded by five mini roundabouts! You will want the third exit off the magic Roundabout following signs for the M4 and the school is located off the dual carriageway on your left.

Beer and Grub: The County Hotel by the ground does not usually allow in away supporters but if you are parking at the Cricket Ground you can get in here and the beer is cheap. Also allowing in away support is the Malt and Hops on Drove Road (off the magic roundabout). The Arkells stand also serves alcohol inside the ground. Otherwise look in the town centre. For grub, there is a Burger King opposite St Joseph's school and there is a good chippy near the Malt and Hops on Droves road but closer to the ground. Inside the ground the Chicken Balti pie is on offer.

Cash Machines: Nationwide machine at the Tescos on Ocotal Way is half a mile away.

How much to get in?

Arkell Stand: Adults £20, Seniors £15, Juniors £7

This is one of the most expensive grounds Wrexham will be visiting this season. The Arkell's stand has seats for 1,200 away fans and the cheaper and uncovered Stratton Bank is only used if demand exceeds this. If you are sitting at the back of the stand your view of one goal could be obstructed by a pillar but the rest of the stand is OK.

There are 6 wheelchair spaces in the away end with helpers located adjacent to or behind the supporter. There is one adapted toilet in the away end and parking spaces behind the main stand is allocated on a first come first served basis.
