The Match |
The first derby match of the season has come around quick
this time around, as last season we had to wait until March before the two
teams clashed at The Racecourse. With both teams
winning their respective home games last season, Wrexham will be looking to
avenge the reverse at the Saunders Honda, especially as Chester now have Jon
Walters and Dean Bennett on their books. |
The Blues |
Manager Mark Wright has been busy in the transfer market with
16 players arriving and 10 leaving Chester since the end of last season.
Faces that will be familiar to Wrexham fans will be Jon Walters and Dean
Bennett whilst former on loan defender Paul Linwood has joined in a
permanent move from Tranmere Rovers
With so many players leaving during the summer it came as
no real surprise that the Chairman's son, Stephen Vaughan, was made captain
for the new season after only making 24 league starts in his two years at
Chester!
Chester lost the services of 'deadly' Derek Asamoah with
the striker heading for pastures new with League One Scunthorpe. He has been
replaced by Jermaine McSporran and Drew Broughton in free transfer moves and
Broughton has been so far favoured to partner Greg Blundell up front. |

Last
season it was honours even between the two sides with the games going in
favour of the home team with 2-1 victories.
The first game was at The Racecourse with Wrexham getting off
to a a good start and the Red Dragons were 2-0 up at half time courtesy of a
header from Danny Williams and a stunning Mark Jones strike. Matt Crowell
also had a first half penalty saved and Chester's late goal proved to be a
consolation.
In the return game at Chester, it was the home side that came
out on top with all goals coming in the second half. Chester opened the
scoring following a very dodgy penalty decision but Lee McEvilly equalised
for Wrexham before Chester secured all three points with a well taken goal
from Derek Asamoah. In the return game, Prior to this, the
teams last met last season in the LDV Vans Trophy with
striker Juan Ugarte scoring his first goal for Wrexham in the 1-0 win at
Chester. Prior to this a FA Cup match in 1997 was the previous game with
Wrexham again coming out on top in a 2-0 win at Chester. The last league
encounters were in 1994/95 with both games ending in draws and Chester's
last win against Wrexham is almost two decades a go in 1986.
The clubs have met on 72 occasions in the league with Wrexham edging the
head-to head with 28 victories against Chester's 26 and there have been 18 draws. |
