Wrexham v

Torquay United

Saturday 21 April 2007

Kick Off @ 15:00

The Match

It is time to do something that we last did on 14th February 2006 and make it two successive leagues win to build on the impressive display at Lincoln last weekend. Torquay arrive at the Racecourse already relegated and we are not going to get a better chance to record our first home win since before Christmas.

The Gulls

Torquay's 1-1 draw at home to Peterborough confirmed their inevitable relegation out of the Football League following a turbulent twelve months on and off the field.

The Gulls must have used all their luck last season when they made the great escape from what looked like certain relegation but a combination of forty plus players, three managers and three Chairman so far this season were unable to steer Torquay out of trouble.

Torquay had made a positive start to the season and looked to be challenging for a play off position win ten games gone but their decline has been dramatic and they have occupied bottom spot for the almost twenty games. They have currently accumulated just 33 points from the 43 games and are well adrift at the bottom of the table.

Torquay are second bottom of the home league and are ranked bottom away from home with only two wins from their 21 games played on the travels. The first of these wins came on the opening day of the season with a 1-0 scoreline at Boston and the last win came a month later courtesy of the same score at Bury.

Top goal scorer for the Gulls is still Jamie Ward with eleven goals but the former Wrexham target left the club on the last day of the January transfer window to join League One strugglers Chesterfield. Ward only joined the club in the summer from Aston Villa and scored the eleven goals in 29 games for the club.

Former Swansea striker Lee Thorpe is the existing top scorer with eight goals this season but has only scored twice in his last fourteen games although he has scored a hat trick this season against Grimsby in January.

Former Chester manager Keith Curle is currently in charge of Torquay after arriving at the club in February following Lubos Kubik's departure after he had replaced Ian Atkins in December.

The teams last met at Plainmoor with the game ending in a 1-1 draw. On Loan Sunderland striker Kevin Smith had give us an early seventh minute lead but Jordan Robertson equalised for the Gulls following the restart.

Last season both games went the way of the home side with Torquay winning 1-0 at home and Wrexham running out comfortable 4-2 winners at the Racecourse.

Jon Walters got the scoring underway and Dean Bennett grabbed a crucial second goal on the stroke of half time. Simon Spender made it 3-0 within four minutes of the restart and although Torquay pulled a goal back, Jon Walters' second strike made the game safe with Torquay grabbing a consolation late on.

The two clubs have only ever met in the league and in the 33 games played, Wrexham just edge it with 14 wins against Torquay's 13 and there have been 6 draws.

Team News

Wrexham Team News: Danny Williams has shrugged off the back injury that forced him out of the win at Lincoln last weekend but Mark Jones is still out with a groin injury along with on-loan Richard Walker who still has tendonitis in his knee. The other good news is that captain Neil Roberts is back after suffering from a calf injury and Robbie Garrett is also available after suffering from a virus in recent weeks. Both players have missed the last three games but will most likely have to settle for a place on the bench as manager Brian Carey is expected to name an unchanged side.

Torquay Team News: Conference bound Torquay arrive at the Racecourse without any fresh injury worries after Simon Rayner was passed fit following a slight groin strain and defender Steve Woods has suffered no reaction after returning from injury. The Gulls still remain without Matt Villis, Craig Taylor and Paul Smith for the visit to the Racecourse.

Boston appear to have a simpler task as they entertain Chester at home.

Car Parking: NEWI College just before the ground and a local car park just before the Shell Garage on the opposite side of the road and both cost around £2.00. Free parking is available on the retail parks by turning left at the second roundabout but do not park in ALDI or you will get clamped! The Official Supporters Club has use of the Centenary Club on matchdays and this is located behind the Sainsburys Stand with the entrance off the club car park. The Plas Coch Retail Park has a pub and is normally a favourite for away supporters. The Railway is located down the side road along the Remploy factory at the opposite end of Crispin Lane to the ground. There are plenty of pubs in the town centre and the closet to the ground is a Wetherspoons Pub by following Mold Road into the town centre and is found on your left hand side. If you continue into the town centre McDonalds will be on your left and the next pub you reach is The Horse and Jockey and opposite that under the archway is a good chip shop. There are more pubs on High Street and to find them continue pass the Horse and Jockey, passing Burger King on your left, and High Street is the junction with Burtons.

Cash Machines: The Shell Garage on Mold Road with further machines at Sainsburys and Boots on the Plas Coch Retail Park. If you are heading into the town centre you will pass a number of banks on your way to the pubs.
