The Exiles |
Newport were formed in 1989 after the
original Newport County folded earlier on in the same year. Due to the
politics surrounding Welsh football, the new Newport were forced to play
their home games in England as the new club decided to rejoin the
English pyramid in an attempt to regain their position in the Football
League. It took a landmark high court case in 1994 to finally confirm
that Newport could play their home games in Wales and they moved into
their newly built Newport Stadium. Newport's nickname, the Exiles,
arises from the time they were exiled in England to play their home
games.
When the teams were originally due to meet at the
beginning of January, Newport were lying in fourth position with 37
points but almost two months on the Exiles have only collected a further
five points and this leaves them outside of the play off positions in
eight position following a run of six games without a win that ended a
week last Saturday at home to Welling United.
County's top goal scorer is striker Craig Hughes with
sixteen goals so far this season and the much travelled Jason
Bowen is not far behind with fourteen. |
Competition History |
The
FAW Premier Cup started in the 1997/1998 season with Wrexham lifting the
first trophy courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Cardiff at the Racecourse. Barry
shocked Wrexham by defeating the holders in the final at the Racecourse the
following season
before Wrexham regained their trophy with a 2-0 win over Cardiff in 2000.
Wrexham kept hold of the trophy with a 2-0 win at Swansea
and the Jacks lost in the final in the following year to rivals Cardiff.
Wrexham crowned off a promotion season by lifting the trophy against Newport
in 2002 and also in the following year by defeating Welsh premier Champions Rhyl
4-1. Swansea defeated Wrexham in the last ever game to be played
at the vetch Field in 2005 and they repeated that performance in 2006 with a
2-1 win at The Racecourse.

Past Encounters |
The teams met at the same stage of the competition last
season with Wrexham running out 2-0 winners with both goals scored by the
now departed Jon Walters in the second half. Prior
to this, the last game was back in 2002 when Wrexham defeated Newport 6-1 in the final
of the Premier Cup. Lee Trundle bagged
a brace with goals each from Andy Morrell, Jim Whitley, Dennis Lawrence and
Shaun Pejic completing the scoring for Wrexham. Newport's consolation
came from Gray Sheppard with twelve minutes left. |

Wrexham: Steve Evans is available for
the Premier Cup game as his suspension only applies to league matches and
Shaun Pejic hopes to play in some part of the game after he returned to
training on Monday following hamstring trouble. Manager Brian Carey revealed
that changes will be made to the team as he will take the opportunity to rest some
players. Newport County: The only injury doubt for the
Exiles is much travelled striker Dean Holdsworth who went off with a tight hamstring
at Yeading on the weekend. |
