Wrexham v

Stockport County

Tuesday 30 January 2007

Kick Off @ 19:45

The Match

With all teams down the bottom appearing to be winning games at the moment, Wrexham have an opportunity this week to collect our first three points since Christmas with the first of two home games. It will be a difficult task as we face a Stockport side that has recorded five wins in their last six league games.

The Hatters

Peter WardStockport's 2-0 win over Wycombe on the weekend has left the Hatters in the final play off spot with a return of 44 points from 29 games.

In stark contrast from last season, when Stockport looked to be heading out of the league until a late revival, manager Jim Gannon has steered his side into contention for promotion courtesy of three straight wins in the league.

Stockport have not travelled well away from Edgeley Park this season and are ranked 19th overall with only three league wins on their travels in 14 games. Their last win was at Peterborough two weeks ago with a comprehensive 3-0 scoreline but this was the first away win since the beginning of November where as at home they have the second best record in the league.

Top goal scorer for Stockport in the league was Adam Le Fondre with six goals, four of which came in the original fixture back in September, but he joined Rochdale last week and promptly grabbed a brace on his debut for Dale. Striker Adam Proudlock is also on six goals this season with three of them coming in cup competitions.

Stockport's have made two signings during the January transfer window with the most noticeable being the signing of midfielder Rory Delap from Sunderland on a free transfer. Delap was once a £4 million signing by Southampton from Derby but after moving to Sunderland 12 months a go, he found opportunities at the Stadium of Light limited and spent a month on loan at Stoke earlier on this season.

Antony Elding was the other signing and the striker has already bagged two goals in three games since his move at the beginning of the month and goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey has joined on loan from Championship side Wolves.

Manager Jim Gannon is in his first full season as manager of Stockport after steering the Hatters clear of the relegation zone last season. Gannon arrived at Edgeley Park with former Wrexham player Peter Ward as his assistant midway through last season following Chris Turner's departure as manager.

Danny Williams had struck two consolations for Wrexham but Mark Robinson grabbed the other goal from the spot.

Last season both games went the way of the home teams with Simon Spender on target in the 2-1 defeat at Edgeley Park but Wrexham won the original game at the Racecourse 3-0 with goals from Jon Walters and a Mark Jones brace.

When you are there
Car Parking: NEWI College just before the ground and a local car park just before the Shell Garage on the opposite side of the road and both cost around £2.00. Free parking is available on the retail parks by turning left at the second roundabout but do not park in ALDI or you will get clamped! Avoid B&Q as they have a maximum stay of two hours and issue parking tickets for £125 and the new Central Retail park just passed the train station operates a time restriction policy.

The Official Supporters Club has use of the Centenary Club on matchdays and this is located behind the Sainsburys Stand with the entrance off the club car park. The Plas Coch Retail Park has a pub and is normally a favourite for away supporters. The Railway is located down the side road along the Remploy factory at the opposite end of Crispin Lane to the ground. There are plenty of pubs in the town centre and the closet to the ground is a Wetherspoons Pub by following Mold Road into the town centre and is found on your left hand side. If you continue into the town centre McDonalds will be on your left and the next pub you reach is The Horse and Jockey and opposite that under the archway is a good chip shop. There are more pubs on High Street and to find them continue pass the Horse and Jockey, passing Burger King on your left, and High Street is the junction with Burtons.
