Hereford United

v Wrexham

Saturday 30 December 2006

Kick Off @ 12:00

The Bulls

Hereford have made a good start in their first season back in the Football League following an absence of nine years. Following the Boxing Day goalless draw against Bristol Rovers, the Bulls find themselves in tenth position with a return of thirty-three points from twenty-four games played.

Their form of late has been a bit patchy with the 1-0 win at Notts County last Saturday their first in the league since the beginning of November. The foundation for their success this season has been at Edgar Street with five wins from twelve games, although they have not won on home soil in the league since the end of October but they did spank Port Vale 4-0 at home in the second round of the FA Cup at the beginning of the month.

Rather surprisingly, the Bulls have not enjoyed most of their victories against teams in the bottom half of the table with only three of their nine wins coming against teams in the wrong half.

Top goal scorer for the Bulls is midfielder Rob Purdie with nine goals so far this season. Purdie joined the Bulls as a trainee in 2002 but this is by far his best season for goals scoring with his last goals coming against Port Vale.

Manager Graham Turner is also the Chairman of Hereford and has been in charge of team affairs since the start of the 1995 season after previously enjoying spells in charge of Shrewsbury, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton.

Past Encounters

Last 5 Meetings

Sep 06: Wrexham 1 Hereford 0
Jan 05: Hereford 1 Wrexham 2
Nov 01: Hereford 1 Wrexham 0
Mar 93: Wrexham 2 Hereford 0
Oct 92: Hereford 1 Wrexham 1

The teams last met in September with Steve Evans, pictured right, heading in the only goal of the game in the first half.

This was the first league encounter between the two sides since the 1992/93 season although there has been two cup games during the thirteen year gap.

The first of these games was back in November 2001 when Hereford defeated Wrexham at Edgar Street in the first round of the FA Cup live on the Match of the Day Cameras.

Wrexham did get revenge for this defeat four years later when defeated Hereford en route to the LDV Vans Trophy win in 2005. The Bulls did take the lead in this game but Juan Ugarte equalised almost immediately and Chris Llewellyn went on to secure the 2-1 win in the second half.

Hereford have the best of the head-to-head in the league with eleven wins compared to Wrexham's seven and there have also been eleven draws in the twenty nine league games played.

Team News

Wrexham Team News: Brian Carey has been registered on non contract terms with the Football league as a virus has ruled out Ryan Valentine and Danny Williams for the visit to Hereford. Carey will take Gareth Evans' place on the bench as he will play alongside Pejic in the centre with Mike Williams moving out to the left.

Matt Crowell will most likely start in Danny Williams' place alongside Darren Ferguson and Denis Smith does have options up front with Kevin Smith back in the squad and Lee McEvilly scoring on Boxing day.

Wrexham remain without the injured Mark Jones, Levi Mackin, Neil Roberts and Juan Ugarte whilst Steve Evans sits out the final match of a four game ban, which means Wrexham are without seven first team players.

Hereford Team News: In contrast, Hereford are at full strength after Andy Williams and Martyn Giles have returned to the squad after suffering from illness and dizzy spells respectively. Their only absentee is the suspended Dean Beckworth with Richard Rose expected to continue in his absence.

Man in the Middle: A Taylor from Cheshire who is in his first season as a referee. A Taylor has refereed 15 games this season, including our goalless home draw against Peterborough this season, and has sent off 4 players and booked 46 at an average of 3.07 per game.
