Match Report

Wrexham produced our poorest display of the season to date in what was a poor game of football at the Racecourse but Hereford took advantage of two defensive mistakes in the second half to take home all three points.

The first half was a poor display from both teams with neither side having the quality in the final third to trouble the defences but Hereford upped the tempo following half time and in the end deserved to come out winners.

Brian Carey sprung a surprise in defence by dropping Shaun Pejic to the bench and started with a back pairing of Steve Evans and Richard Hope with Anthony Williams also replacing Michael Jones in goal. Mark Jones got the starting place ahead of Levi Mackin alongside Danny Williams in midfield and Wrexham reverted back to 4-4-2 with Matty Done and Neil Roberts recalled to the starting line-up.

The first half was nothing to write home about with our best effort coming from Chris Llewellyn after he had cut in from the right wing but his shot took a deflection and failed to trouble Wayne Brown in the Hereford goal.

Wrexham were forced into a change when Steve Evans was caught on his troublesome ankle and after receiving treatment, the big defender eventually limped off to be replaced by Shaun Pejic.

Hereford enjoyed more of the ball as the game wore on but did not create many charges and Anthony Williams remained largely a spectator for the first half.

Neil Roberts went close as a forgettable first half was drawing to a close but he was off target with a header after a rare bit of quality from Llewellyn provided the Wrexham captain with the opportunity.

Wrexham did start the second half the brighter and Michael Proctor had a good opportunity after clever play by Mark Jones but the Wrexham striker waited too long to get his shot away and the ball was eventually diverted out of play.

The Wrexham defence were caught eight minutes after the restart as Hereford broke quickly at the other end of the pitch with Robinson and Diaggoura combining well and after Robinson saw his initial shot blocked by Richard Hope on the line, the ball rebounded to Kris Taylor who had a simple task to score from six yards.

Hope ended up in Premier League ref Phil Dowd's book following the goal after blocking the first shot on the line with his hand but escaped a red card after Taylor converted the rebound.

Wrexham responded with another good run from Matty Done forcing a corner and after the Hereford defence could only clear Jones’ cross to Llewellyn, there was no striker on the end of his superb cross that in the end bounced comfortably through to Brown.

Proctor had a low shot from the edge of the area that at least he did trouble Brown but just after the hour mark he was heading off the pitch along with Chris Llewellyn to be replaced by Eifion Williams and Michael Carvill respectively.

This substitution did not go down well with the home fans but almost paid instant dividends when Carvill was picked out on the right and Williams was unlucky as he got on the end of his low cross but Brown made the save.

Hereford made their first change of the game midway through the second half when Trevor Benjamin and Ben Smith replaced Steve Guinan and goalscorer Kris Taylor respectively.

Benjamin was only on the pitch six minutes when he made the game safe for Hereford and not for the first time this season Richard Hope was at fault for the goal.

There looked nothing on for Benjamin as he received a lofted ball into the box from Easton.

Bejamin was only eight yards out with Hope too deep as the rest of the Wrexham defence were on the edge of the penalty area and Benjamin controlled the ball and turned Hope before smashing the ball past Williams at the near post.

Eifion Williams did impress when he came on and must be now pushing for a first team start and he had our best shot of the afternoon when he controlled the ball just outside the box and fired in a dipping shot that Brown did well to tip over for a corner.

Shaun Pejic and Danny Williams both failed to convert headers as the game wore on and it was no surprise when the final whistle from Phil Dowd was met with boos from what was left of the Wrexham supporters.

Match Reaction

Brian Carey: "I am bitterly disappointed. We looked very ineffective today, and went down with a whimper to be honest. I thought Hereford came and frustrated us early on, but we didn't ask them enough questions whatsoever. We started well, Matty Done in particular, and did have some chances to take but we didn't take them. The longer it went on the more they grew into the game, and as they got more confident they got the goal. Just like the other night against Aston Villa when the goal went in the heads went down a little more. We stopped believing in what we were doing, stopped doing what we were good at and became one-dimensional. Anything becomes a habit if you do it regularly enough but its up to us to make sure that we bounce back again. The fortunate thing is that we have now got two weeks to our next game. The fact that we are missing games due to the international call-ups is something that happens all the time and we've got to get on with it." [Source: Wrexham FC - click here for more]
