Match Report |
Wrexham’s ended their 87-year run
as a Football League club with a thrilling 4-2 win at Lincoln City.
After such a disappointing season, Wrexham fans finally had something to
cheer about with four goals scored for the first time in the league
since December 2005 and we also had what is now a custom comical own
goal, but this time it did not prove costly.
Levi Mackin opened the scoring when he glanced in Wes Baynes’ free kick
in the eleventh minute and Baynes doubled the advantage just after the
half hour mark with a sweetly struck free kick.
Steve Evans headed the ball over Ward to give Lincoln a glimmer of hope
with six minutes of the first half left but fans had to wait until the
final minutes of the game for the next goal when Baynes scored from
another well taken free kick.
Ben Wright reduced our advantage as the game entered injury time but
there was still time left for Chris Llewellyn to grab our fourth of the
afternoon.
Wes Baynes put in another superb performance and it was from his free
kick that Wrexham opened the scoring.
A good touch from Marc Williams drew the foul from the Lincoln defence
and Baynes whipped in the free kick to the near post where Mackin ran in
to flick the ball past Duffy for his first goal in a Wrexham shirt.
Wrexham looked like the team who were going to grab the next goal with
Lincoln struggling in the final third of the pitch and good approach
play almost led to the second goal midway through the first half.
It was a patient build up from Wrexham and the pass from Marc Williams
looked to have set Baynes clear but Daniel Horne tracked back well and
managed to tackle Baynes as he was about to play the ball to Llewellyn
in acres of space.
Wrexham were not to be denied and a second dually arrived ten minutes
later.
Baynes was again involved in the build up when he was brought down on
the edge of the box and he punished the Imps from the free kick that
left Duffy routed to the spot as the ball nestled in the bottom corner.
Wrexham gave Lincoln a glimmer of hope that they did not deserve with an
absolute howler from Steve Evans with six minutes of the half remaining.
There looked to be no danger as Evans was tracking back to deal with a
long clearance from Lee Beevers.
All he had to do was head the bouncing ball back to Ward who had come
off his line to collect but Evans just looped the ball over the stranded
keeper and could only watch in horror as the ball bounced into the empty
net.
It was no surprise that Lincoln came out stronger in the second half and
the Wrexham goal began to live a charmed life as the home side went in
search for the equaliser.
A combination of poor finishing, last ditched challenges and the
woodwork left the Imps frustrated.
Gavin Ward had to turn away a free kick from Forrester behind for a
corner and Wrexham replied with a well struck shot from Baynes that
Duffy did well to claim at the first attempt.
Carl Tremarco, playing his first game in six weeks, was well positioned
to clear a shot from Wright off the line on the hour mark and Wrexham
had an even luckier escape thirteen minutes later.
Ben Wright must still be wondering how he failed to score with sixteen
minutes left when he latched onto a knock down in the box but somehow
blazed his volley from all of two yards high over the bar.
A deflected shot in the last ten minutes looked to have Ward beaten but
he reacted well to save at the foot of the near post and the superb 600
travelling Wrexham fans were almost celebrating a third when Pejic
almost converted a corner from Baynes.
The Wrexham fans did not have to wait long as we scored the third for
the first time in a game this season when Baynes struck another free
kick past Duffy inside of the near post after Llewellyn was fouled on
the edge of the area.
There was still time for Lincoln to grab a goal back when Wright this
time found the target as he slotted the ball past Ward down from the
left side of the area as the game went into four minutes of injury time.
Lincoln almost grabbed the equaliser in injury time when Beevers had a
headed blocked by Steve Evans and he struck the rebound against the
post.
Carl Tremarco was again well positioned to prevent Forrester from
getting a shot in on the edge of six yard box but Wrexham quickly turned
defence into attack with Marc Williams playing in Chris Llewellyn and
the striker at least ended the season on a high by lifting the ball over
the advanced Duffy from the edge of the area for our fourth of the
afternoon. |
Match Reaction |
Brian Little: "A result does
help people a little. Maybe it is a positive, but we have had a season
where there have been a shed-load of negatives. Even here we were 2-0 up
and then we go and give away just about the craziest of own goals. But
we had two fine strikes from Wes Baynes. I think he is on his way to
becoming a very good player and just needs to work now on his ability to
read the game.” [Source:
