After the debacle of Tuesday night, the only way
is up performance wise for Wrexham with the only plus from the 4-0 defeat
to Chesterfield is that we did not drop to bottom of the league.
At the same time, Accrington were cruising to a 3-0 away
victory at Bradford and this game is going to be a real test of
character as we look to end our 100% away record.
Unfortunately, we have lost every game we have played
away from the Racecourse in the league this season and we are the only
team in our division that are yet to collect a point on our travels.
Accrington have had a mixed start at home this season
with two wins and two defeats in the four games at the Fraser Eagle
Stadium.
The first two games at home for Stanley ended in
comprehensive defeats against Darlington and Peterborough but since
then, Accrington have recorded successive wins over Grimsby and
Mansfield.
Four goals were rattled in against Grimsby with only
one in reply and Stanley's overall record sees them in twelfth position
with twelve points from eight games.
Having touched bottom spot once this season,
Accrington are yet to record a draw in their eight league games but the
majority of their wins have come against teams that are currently
sitting below them in the table.
Top scorer for Stanley is striker Paul Mullin and he
has found the back of the net five time sin the league this season -
which is the same number of league goals we have registered as an entire
team!
Former Wrexham striker Lee McEvilly returned to his
previous club in the summer after being released whilst under contract
by Wrexham.
McEvilly has yet to register a goal for his former
club and has already served a three game ban this season, returning to
action as a late substitute on Tuesday night.
Recent Encounters:
With Accrington only returning to the Football League last
season, recent matches are over 50 years apart but Stanley completed the
double over us last season.
The 5-0 hammering at Accrington under the lights, or a
40 watt bulb, was our first defeat of the season but was also the start of
our downward spiral and when Stanley left the Racecourse on New Year's
Day with a 3-1 victory, it turned out to be Denis Smith's last home game
in charge when he was sacked ten days later.
Team News:
Michael Proctor is back in the squad after completing
his suspension following the midweek game against Chesterfield but your
guess is as good as mine on the team selection and formation for this
game.
There is more good news with Silvio Spann and Eifion
Williams back from injury but Ryan Valentine and Mike Williams are again
unavailable and they are joined on the sidelines by Marc Williams who is
out with a groin injury.
Accrington are without Kenny Arthur after the
goalkeeper broke his leg in the midweek win at Bradford.
Arthur has been ever present in the league for Stanley
after joining the club from Patrick Thistle in the summer and his place
between the sticks will be taken by Ian Dunbavin.
Midfielder Ian Craney, who is on loan from Swansea,
also went off injured in the same game and has been ruled out with a
torn hamstring but Jay Harris is back following a three game ban.
Elsewhere in League 2:
League leaders MK Dons face a home match against
Bradford after confirming their position at the top of the pile with a
welcome 2-1 victory at bottom placed Mansfield, who are keeping us off
the bottom of the table. The Stags face a
difficult game at our midweek conquerors Chesterfield who moved up
second place following their 4-0 win at the Racecourse.
Lincoln are our immediate target with the Imps one place
and point above us in the table and they are at home to Morecambe who
have made a good start in their debut season in the Football League. |
