Match Report |
Wrexham responded to the midweek
defeat to Chesterfield in perfect fashion with a comfortable 2-0 victory
at Accrington.
Clinical finishes in either half from Neil Roberts proved to be the
difference between the two sides and the scoreline was a fair eflection
on the game that Wrexham edged throughout.
Roberts took full advantage of a deflected shot from Chris Llewellyn to
place the ball past keeper Ian Dunbavin in the first half and a well timed volley
finished off a superb pass from Mark Jones midway through
the second half that allowed us to relax for the remainder of the game.
Wrexham stuck with the same 3-5-2 formation for the third game running
but there were changes in personnel with Steve Evans, Mike Carvill and
Matt Crowell making way and Marc Williams was unavailable through
injury.
This meant a welcome return of Shaun Pejic in defence with Simon Spender
at right wing back and Chris Llewellyn playing alongside Mark Jones and
Robbie Garrett in midfield, whilst Michael Proctor returned from
suspension to partner Neil Roberts up front.
Wrexham controlled the game from the first whistle and Chris Llewellyn
was finding a lot of space in midfield to unsettle the home defence but
his final ball was not always there for Wrexham to add the finishing
touch.
It was Michael Proctor who had the first chance on goal when he was off
target with a chip from forty yards after he noticed Ian Dunbavin off
his line but his attempt drifted wide.
Wrexham went even closer with thirteen minuets gone when Danny Williams
met a Mark Jones corner from the right but he was unlucky to see his
header rebound off the far post with Accrington scrambling clear.
Wrexham continued to keep their hosts under pressure and it was
difficult to wok out which team had been on the wrong end of a midweek
4-0 home defeat or had won 3-0 away from home as Accrington’s confidence
from their midweek stroll at Bradford quickly evaporated.
Michael Proctor’s hard work almost resulted in him taking advantage of a
drop from Dunbavin but after a scramble in the Accrington penalty area,
the home defence managed to clear the danger.
Accrington did enjoy a spell of pressure around the half hour mark but
resolute defending restricted them to half chances and Anthony Williams’
goal remained intact.
It was no surprise when Wrexham opened the scoring eight minutes before
half time when a shot from Chris Llewellyn was deflected into the path
of Neil Roberts and he made no mistake from the edge of the area,
curling the ball right footed past Dunbavin who had not recovered his
position from the initial shot.
This was no more than Wrexham deserved but the goal provided Accrington
with an added impetus and Cavangh almost took advantage of a Neil Taylor
slip but his shot was deflected into the side netting.
Wrexham held out to half time but Danny Williams, who was limping
towards the end of the first half, was replaced by Steve Evans with
Shaun Pejic moving into the centre of defence.
Chances remained at a premium following the restart with Wrexham
content with what we had and Accrington lacking any creativity to unlock
our defence.
The first opportunity fell to Michael Proctor when he got on the end of
a pin point left wing cross from Neil Taylor but he could only steer his
header at Dunbavin who blocked the ball with his feet.
The turning point in the game came after the hour mark when the Wrexham
defence were finally carved open but David Brown could only fire
straight at Anthony Williams when a yard either side would have resulted
in the equaliser.
Wrexham turned defence into attack quickly and following a fluent move,
a superb inch perfect cross from Mark Jones was converted at the far
post by a volley from Neil Roberts for his and our second of the
evening.
Stanley introduce substitutes in an attempt to get back in the game with
former Wrexham striker Lee McEvilly introduced for the final twenty
minutes.
McEvilly had chances with Anthony Williams going down well at his near
post to gather his shot after he had turned well on the edge
of the area.
McEvilly then failed to convert with a header but Wrexham should have had
a penalty when Neil Roberts was man handled to the ground in the box
when he was about to convert for his hat trick.
Substitute Shaun Whalley was getting past Spender with ease down the
Stanley left and a good save from Williams was required to cut out his
testing cross but the Wrexham defence held out.
Accrington should have ended the game with ten men when Sean Webb
scythed down Mark Jones as he was about to break through with the only
intention of the Stanley defender was to take Jones out twenty five
yards out from goal but Proctor's effort lacked any power to trouble
Dunbavin, who opted not to set a wall for the free kick.
Neil Roberts and Mark Jones left the field soon after and Wrexham
celebrated at the final whistle following a professional job well done.

Match Reaction |
Brian Carey: "After the few
days we have had following the defeat to Chesterfield, to see so many
fans on the away terraces was a major boost. We all know results have
not been good enough this season and Tuesday night's performance was
poor, so for people still to get out of the house on a Friday evening
and make their way to Accrington in such large numbers was tremendous.
Not only that, but from the start of the game they got behind the
players, giving them great vocal support."
