Match Report

A much improved Wrexham performance was enough to pick up our first draw of the season but the game could have ended in our favour if Ryan Valentine had converted a first half penalty when we were on top.

Wrexham played our best football witnessed at the Racecourse since the first home game of the season against Morecambe, but despite all our dominance throughout the first half, we were unable to test Frank Fielding enough in the Wycombe goal and his only meaningful save was from Valentine’s penalty in the 25th minute.

Wycombe struck back after the break and enjoyed plenty of the ball but their best chances came from the dangerous inswinging corners that Wrexham were having difficulty in defending underneath our own bar.

Brian Carey watched on from the touchline with the players finally rewarding him with a performance that would have kept him in a job in had they applied the same attitude during the last month.

It was no surprise to see the out of sorts Steve Evans fail to make the starting line-up with Gareth Evans taking his place in the back four, and there was a change on the wings with Matty Done and Silvio Spann given starts to allow Chris Llewellyn to take the place of Neil Roberts upfront.

The good movement offered by Llewellyn and Eifion Williams, coupled with the pace of Matty Done, meant Wrexham no longer had to result to the long ball that has been a trade mark of recent weeks.

Instead, the ball was kept on the ground and Wrexham looked to stretch the Wycombe defence at every opportunity and a combination of a better final ball and composure in the final third would have resulted in a comfortable first half lead for the home side.

The initial bright opening came to nothing as the only incident to note was a lunge from Silvio Spann that earned the midfielder the first booking, although a stricter referee could easily have shown red after the Trinidadian left the ground to tackle Stefan Oakes.

The first real incident on goal came when the on loan Matty Collins set Done clear down the left but the winger’s shot was blocked by the Wycombe defence when he had Chris Llewellyn and Silvio Spann up in support.

A flowing passing move that started on the left before switching to the right and then back to the left again cut open the Wycombe defence and as Ryan Valentine threaded the ball through to Done, the winger was clipped on the heel and the referee pointed to the spot but Valentine’s effort was poorly struck and Fielding made a comfortable save by diving to his right.

When you thought that the season could not get any worse, it almost did when the ball broke kindly for Wycombe in our box but smart defending from Richard Hope managed to clear the danger.

Matty Collins became the second player in the book before the half hour mark and Wycombe’s Russell Martin followed soon after for a foul on Done as referee Moss was starting to dish unnecessary cards out like they were going out of fashion.

This did not dampen Wrexham’s tempo to the game and the energy from midfield meant we finished the first half on top but despite chances falling the way of Matty Done, Eifion Williams and Silvio Spann, none of these registered on the target and the half ended goalless as a result.

Wrexham continued where we left off following the restart and Eifion Williams had an early chance when he turned on the edge of the area and at least forced Fielding into a save with a well struck shot.

But this optimism for the home time proved to be short lived as Wycombe started to dominate proceedings for a while as they got a strangle hold on midfield and Martin Bullock was becoming a constant thorn in Wrexham’s side.

Their main attacking threat came from the well delivered corners from Tom Williams who had a knack of whipping the ball in underneath the Wrexham bar and the home defence managed to scramble clear on the majority of occasions, but David McCracken should have done better than hitting over the bar when the ball dropped to him inside of the box.

Brian Carey started to make changes with twenty minutes left when Eifion Williams was replaced by Marc Williams and Michael Proctor replaced Silvio Spann soon after.

Sandwiched in between these two substitutions was a good chance for Wycombe when Richard Hope was harshly awarded a free kick against him and was lucky not to pick up a booking for dissent but Tom Williams curled his effort over the bar.

Wrexham had failed to test Fielding since the opening stages of the second half but the Wycombe keeper did not help himself when he could only clear to Proctor on the touch line but the striker's long range effort dropped over the bar.

Michael Proctor also had a free kick in a promising position but he curled the ball over the bar and Williams had to pull off a save from Reid in the dying seconds when it looked easier to score but the game ended goalless.

Match Reaction

Brian Carey: I thought that we did well tonight. It was the performance that we have been waiting for and credit to the lads for that, they really dug in, had a go and showed more of what we are about. The second half was a little bit cagey but overall I think that we deserved to win the game. The players don't play for themselves, they play for the team and they certainly did that tonight."
