Match Report |
Despite entering four minutes of
injury time with a 2-1 lead, we somehow left Moss Rose with no points as
the Silkmen struck twice in injury time to secure their first home win
of the season.
We literally coasted into a 2-0 lead courtesy of a Michael Proctor
penalty and a well taken Chris Llewellyn goal but our hosts pulled one
back before half time.
Despite holding the advantage, you always felt we required a third goal
to secure our win but we just sat back and invited the inevitable
pressure on our defence.
But apart from a couple of second half breakaways in the second half, it
was Macclesfield who were the team in the ascendency during but their
keeper, Tommy Lee, produced one of the most disgraceful ‘professional’
acts that resulted in Robbie Garrett collecting his second yellow card.
The red card did spur us on but slack marking allowed the Silkmen to
equalise with a free header from Morely levelled the game one minute
into injury time and a fluke of a goal from Thomas two minutes later was
just a bitter pill to swallow.
Wrexham stuck with the same team that won convincingly in our last match
at Accrington but it was Macclesfield who had the first attempt when
defender Dave Morley found space in the box but could only divert the
ball well over from a tight angle.
Wrexham responded with Michael Proctor and Neil Roberts causing havoc in
the home defence and after the ball broke to Proctor, a rash challenge
from McNulty resulted in a penalty and Proctor made no mistake from the
spot by sending Lee the wrong way with a confident finish.
The Macclesfield defence looked uneasy and Proctor charged down a
clearance from Lee but McNulty managed to save his keeper’s blushes by
rescuing the ball but this proved to be only a short term relief for the
Macclesfield defence.
Mark Jones made the most of a flick on from Neil Roberts by bursting to
the area and his low cut back was met by Chris Llewellyn who despatched
low into the far corner for his first goal of the season.
For some reason, we just sat back on this lead and invited pressure on
our defence that had been untested for the opening half hour of the
game.
Danny Thomas was the main attacking outlet for Macclesfield down the
left and indecision from Mark Jones and Simon Spender resulted in Jones
being penalised for shirt pull on Thomas on the edge of the area.
This earned Jones the first booking of the game but the wall did its job
by deflecting the ball behind but we were unable to keep Macclesfield at
bay for much longer.
Thomas, as ever, was the main danger and after Anthony Williams failed
to come for his telling cross, Neil Taylor was out muscled by Levi Reid
and his header back across goal was converted by Martin Gritton nine
minutes before half time.
Robbie Garrett then collected the first of his yellow cards for a rash
lunge on the touch line and despite a promising attack, Michael Proctor
was unable to pick out a red shirt in the box and the Silkmen cleared
the resulting corner.
Wrexham finished the first half without Danny Williams who limped off to
be replaced by Mike Williams but there were no changes during the break
with the second half starting in much of the same way that its
predecessor ended.
Macclesfield finished the half with a superb shot from Thomas that
narrowly drifted wide but it was Gritton who should have levelled
matters following the restart when he headed McIntyre’s centre over the
bar.
The striker then went onto surpassing this miss when he put a clear
diving header wide of the target but despite expecting a Macclesfield
onslaught, this failed to materialise and the Wrexham defence remained
comfortable for the majority of the second half.
Eifion Williams had replaced Michael Proctor just after the hour mark
and was denied by the quick thinking of Lee who had raced off his line
but it was Macclesfield who had enjoyed the better of the possession
without ever threatening our goal.
The turning point of the game came with ten minutes left when Robbie
Garrett chased down a back pass and his momentum took him into the
Macclesfield keeper.
Lee was fully aware that Garrett was already on a yellow card and
grabbed hold of the on loan midfielder and following the inevitable
scuffle, both players were shown a yellow card and Garrett’s second
caution was followed up with a red.
Wrexham remained with the same outfield players with Neil Roberts
operating as a midfielder but it was Wrexham who created the best
chances on the breakaway but Chris Llewellyn was off target with both of
his finishes on the outside of his left foot.
If one of these strikes had registered on the target then the game would
have been over but Wrexham could not hold on as the fourth official
displayed that there would be four minutes of injury time to be played.
Mark Jones conceded an unnecessarily free kick on the left touch line
and Wrexham were made to pay for this in emphatic style when Dave Morley
was allowed a free header in the box from McIntyre’s set play to bullet
a header home past Williams.
This came one minute into injury time and after Wrexham cleared another
corner you thought we had secured a point but this was lost when Thomas
collected the ball on the left wing but he miscued his cross that sailed
past Williams and went in off the far post.
Absolute disaster! Garrett or no Garrett, we somehow contrived to snatch
a defeat from the jaws of victory as the referee soon blew up for half
time.
It was an astonishing ending to a game where we should have gone home
with three points but ended up with none. |
Match Reaction |
Brian Carey: "I thought the
game was dead and we were comfortable, dealing with everything they
threw at us. The sending off totally changed the nature of the game.
Robbie was trying to get out of the clutches of the goalkeeper who
grabbed onto him and wouldn't let him go. The referee books Robbie and I
can't believe that we've played against Macclesfield and again I'm
talking about a referee. Robbie was very hard done by. There was a
collision and he's trying to get away from the keeper, but he's got hold
of him and he couldn't run away. But the referee's done what he's done
and we've lost the game. We pushed on again today and got a couple of
goals; the game plan was working perfectly. We've dealt with everything
they've thrown at us. You can't legislate for what happened today with
us going down to ten men and giving them the impetus. They'd gone quiet
themselves and didn't know where the goal was going to come from - until
they were given a helping hand." [Source:
