Match Report |
Wrexham made a winning start to the new season at the Racecourse but
made hard work of the 2-1 victory over league new comers Morecambe Bay.
Wrexham raced into a two goal lead within half an hour of the start
courtesy of two clinical finishes by Michael Proctor but failed to put
the game beyond Morecambe and almost paid for this as the visitors
though back in the second half.
Brian Carey kept with the same outfield team that started in midweek
against Port Vale but, as expected, Anthony Williams returned in goal
ahead of Michael Jones. There were two changes on the subs bench with
the returning Mark Jones and Eifion Williams taking the places of the
unlucky Connell Murtagh and Marc Williams.
Both sides started the game positively but it was Wrexham who were
celebrating the breakthrough in the sixth minute following good work by
Levi Mackin to set Simon Spender away down the right. Spender laid off
to Llewellyn who picked out Michael Proctor with a superb cross and the
striker made no mistake with his header from about twelve yards out.
Proctor was always looking to shoot at every moment and following a good
exchange with Chris Llewellyn, Proctor almost doubled our lead with ten
minutes on the clock but his shot went narrowly wide.
It was not one way traffic and Morecambe broke well down their left and
Thompson almost equalised moments later when he latched onto Twiss’ ball
but his shot rebounded off the foot of the post.
Wrexham continued to look dangerous going forward and the first half
performance was one of the best displays the 5,000 home fans have
witnessed at the Racecourse for some time.
The second goal when it came midway through the first half showed great
vision by Valentine as the Morecambe defence went missing.
Nothing looked on as Valentine received the ball just inside the
Morecambe half but the two Morecambe centre backs went walkabout and
Valentine picked out Proctor in acres of space down the middle.
Goalkeeper Joe Lewis raced off his line and he was in no mans land as
Proctor calmly lifted the ball over his head and into the empty net for
his second of the afternoon.
Valentine showed more great vision a minute after the goal and he almost
sent Neil Roberts clean through at goal but he was stopped following a
well timed tackle from Bentley.
It was now all Wrexham with Morecambe’s attacks now rare and Llewellyn
almost made it three just before the half hour mark when his header from
Done’s corner was cleared from the line by Twiss.
Neil Roberts went close with ten minutes of the half left when he fired
in a long range shot that just cleared the bar and the only threat on
the Wrexham goal was when Pejic had to head clear a cross from inside
the six yard box but Wrexham left the field to a round of applause.
Morecambe had to do something at the interval and manager Sammy McIlroy
introduced former Wrexham striker Jon Newby for Jamie Burns and the
Shrimps reduced the arrears within ten minutes of the restart.
By this time, Proctor had curled an effort wide for Wrexham but good
build up play down the Morecambe right created the opening for Jon Newby
to score from close range after having an earlier strike chalked off for
a push.
Wrexham responded by replacing Matty Done with Eifion Williams with
Llewellyn still staying out on the right flank but this change did
little to turn around our fortunes as we the visitors continued to
control the game.
Garry Thompson should have done better when he headed over and in a rare
Wrexham attack, substitute Eifion Williams forced Lewis into a diving
save from the edge of the area.
Morecambe continued to press but Josh Johnson, on as substitute for
Chris Llewellyn, went close after his cross almost dropped in over Lewis
but in the end just cleared the cross bar with ten minutes left.
Morecambe used all their substitutes in a bid to get back into the game
and one of these, Wayne Curtis, should have done better after a mistake
from Hope allowed him a clear shot at goal but Williams was off his line
quickly to block the shot.
There was still time at the death for Craig Stanley but in the end we
just about crossed the finishing line with our noses in front but
realistically it was three points that we should have had in the bag by
half time. |
Match Reaction |
Brian Carey: "I'm happy with the win, delighted with the
three points and delighted that we're off the mark in the league and up
and running. We had the first half and could have scored more goals, but
Morecambe definitely had the better of things in the second half. I've
just said to the players that regardless of the result and how things
are going we're building for the future. We know there's things we've
got to get better at. We know there's things we have to work at, but I'm
delighted with the result. I was pleased with the first half. We've been
a little bit patchy so far but as I said we're still working at things
and it'll take time for things to work out how we want them to. We're in
the middle of a rebuilding stage and things will take time. They won't
always be as easy as it was at time in the first period. In the first 45
minutes I thought we did well and controlled things, although in the
second period Morecambe showed why they had beaten Preston in midweek.
They have just come up from the Conference and showed that they have got
some good players. They got on top at the start of the second half and
we couldn't really get back into it at that stage. We were rocking when
they pulled a goal back, and to be fair Anthony Williams did well to
save a one-on-one chance late on, which would have levelled the score.
It was always going to be difficult to sustain our first half
performance for the full ninety minutes, especially for some of the
younger ones who had played 120 minutes at Port Vale on Tuesday. I think
that showed during the second half today."

a few quid for every time I scored against Wrexham I'd be a rich man! I
just hope we draw them in the first round of the F.A. Cup now! It's
pleasing from a personal point of view, but obviously as a team we're
disappointed we didn't get anything from the game. Wrexham have always
been a lucky team for me, I don't know what it is. I didn't know whether
I'd make it onto the bench or not today; if I'd known I'd have had a
fiver on myself! I'd have liked to have stayed here last season and got
a few goals for the club. It's a fantastic club and I got on really well
with Brian Carey. [Source:
