Match Report

Brian Carey’s position as manger hangs in the balance after his side lost 2-0 to Barnet in a game that Carey described as a must win.

The result means we drop into the bottom two but despite a host of changes, we were unable to address our soft centre and the current slump in form.

The first half was anything to write home about with both teams not looking likely to break the deadlock but Barnet upped the ante following the restart and Wrexham were unable to find a response to Liam Hatch’s second half brace.

Hatch had already fired a warning shot with a disallowed goal following the restart but Wrexham looked bereft of ideas after Barnet opened the scoring.

This trend in play continued and you could count our number of shots on goal in one hand by the end with Wrexham hardly looking like scoring throughout the ninety minutes.

Goal scoring is proving difficult at the moment, especially at home, and another blank today means we have only scored in two of our eight home games so far this season.

The wing back system is not helping as we rarely got behind a Barnet side that had a comfortable afternoon.

Brian Carey made drastic changes to his starting line up but stuck with the same formation that capitulated at Macclesfield last weekend.

Out went Anthony Williams in goal but his replacement, Michael Jones, did not take his chance to secure a permanent place in the starting eleven with an absolute howler for the second goal.

The other victims of the soft centre clearout meant Shaun Pejic never made the bench whilst Danny Williams was ruled out because of injury and Silvio Spann took the suspended Robbie Garrett’s place in midfield.

Mike Williams replaced Danny Williams but there was a big surprise in defence with Gareth Evans, who had been sent out on loan to Northwich Victoria last month, was favoured ahead of Welsh international Steve Evans who had to settle for a place on the bench.

Both teams struggled to exert any pressure in the opening stages and the first half hour passed with hardly any threat on goal.

Chris Llewellyn had a shot charged down but Barnet went close at the other end when a volley from Liam Hatch dipped onto the top of the bar with Michael Jones just a spectator in the Wrexham goal.

Not for the first time in the game, Michael Proctor was flagged offside as he fired past Harrison in the Barnet goal but his opposite number then showed his inexperience in the Wrexham goal.

Jones had collected the ball comfortably from a Barnet attack but as he was bouncing the ball, it struck one of the many divots on the Racecourse pitch that had cut up badly in the first half and gathered the ball for a second time.

The linesman spotted this infringement and flagged for a free kick that Wrexham defended well as the ball rebounded clear off the wall.

Far too often we were by passing midfield with constant long balls from the back and the net result was that we conceded possession.

The annoying part was when we did play the ball on the deck, we looked if we could open up the Barnet defence and the best chance we had was following a flowing move down the left but no one could get on the end of Taylor’s low cross to the far post.

Silvio Spann fired in a rasping free kick as the first half went into injury time that Harrison spilled in front of him but there was no one in a red shirt on hand to convert the lose ball.

Michael Proctor made way for Eifion Williams at the start of the second half and Wrexham made a positive start following the restart with Simon Spender making good progress down the right.

The first move ended with a good cross from Spender but Roberts or Williams were unable find that crucial touch as the chance went begging and soon after Spender found himself in another good position but he could not get any height on his attempted lob over Harrison who was too far off his line.

Barnet then had a goal of their own disallowed when Hatch was penalised for a foul on Evans when he headed in a right wing cross from six yards out but the ball should have been claimed by Jones before it had reached Hand.

Barnet only had to wait for a further five minutes to open the scoring when Hatch was this time left unmarked at the back post to convert Puncheon’s low cross after he had skinned Spender down the right.

It took eight minutes for our second substitution to take place but rather surprisingly we stuck with the same formation that was clearly not working with Marc Williams replacing Neil Roberts.

Within two minutes the formation was changed to 4-4-2 when Matty Done replaced Mike Williams and Chris Llewellyn moved out to the right wing.

Disaster struck before the players had time to settle into the new formation as Hatch had a simple task to score his second when Jones had rushed off his line but his header struck Spender and his clearance rebounded kindly for Hatch to score in the empty net.

We rarely threatened after the second goal with a long range Mark Jones shot the best we could muster as a response.

A wayward pack pass gave us an opportunity from a corner but despite an almighty scramble on the goal line we were unable to force the ball in and you then sensed the game was up.

The expected boos at the final whistle did not materialise with many of the Wrexham fans left in stunned silence following the demoralizing defeat.

Match Reaction

Brian Carey: "That is another home defeat and we just haven't performed at home this season. At home we have made things really difficult for ourselves. There were one or two decent performances but not too many can hold their heads up high. There were too many who showed today that it doesn't matter what goes on between a Monday and a Friday but it is what happens on a Saturday that counts. At the moment we just looked a shadow of ourselves. We were slow to start with and did okay during the first half without really busting a gut and we got in there second-half but it was hard work all round. We had a couple of chances but really need to get the first goal. That didn't come, but once they got their first goal it was evident for everyone to see that as a collective our heads went down. We needed our characters to emerge and stand up strong, we had some but not too many. I didn't get the response that I wanted. I brought lads on off the bench to try and liven things up but we didn't get the response that we needed. Once we conceded the first goal went in I was disappointed with the reaction."
