Match Report

Wrexham’s six game unbeaten run ended at home to Peterborough with Jamie Day scoring both goals from second half free kicks.

The first was from a deflected shot in the sixty fifth minute after Chris Llewellyn needlessly handled the ball on the edge of the area but his second strike, with nine minutes left, was a quality effort that ended the game as a contest.

The goals also ended a run of three clean sheets but Wrexham are currently suffering a drought at the other end of the pitch with our last goal coming three games ago against Darlington at the beginning of the month.

For the second game running, Wrexham again never looked like threatening the Peterborough goal from open play with our best chances coming from set plays.

Peterborough were not much better in creating chances during the ninety minutes but they always edged possession and never looked like letting slip the lead given to them by full-back Day who was also a constant menace down the Peterborough left all evening.

The result leaves Wrexham still six points adrift of Macclesfield in twenty-second position, but a much needed win over Mansfield on the weekend will not be enough to sees us leap frog the Stags who are one place and four points ahead of us in the table.

Drewe Broughton received the necessary clearance on the continuation of his loan from the MK Dons to start the game with the only change coming in midfield with Silvio Spann replacing the injured Danny Sonner.

The loss of Sonner, and the continued absence of Neil Roberts, left Wrexham lacking a lot of bite in midfield and the home side struggled under a lot of first half pressure.

Peterborough did start the game in positive fashion but half chances for Mackail-Smith and Mclean were snuffed out by the Wrexham defence and it was the home side who should have opened the scoring after only five minutes.

It was no surprise that the build up came from a well delivered free kick by Spann and after Peterborough could only clear to the edge of the area, Jeff Whitley’s shot was controlled by the onside Drewe Broughton but he could only fire a free shot at Joe Lewis from just twelve yards out.

Joe Lewis and Steve Evans clashed for the second time in three weeks but this time Lewis dropped a Spann free kick in a crowd of players and got lucky as Wrexham could not force the ball home.

The Peterborough defence were struggling with the early quality of Spann’s set plays but this time a poor inswinging corner almost resulted in a goal at the near post as the away defence scrambled clear.

But just like on Saturday in the home goalless draw against Grimsby, Wrexham’s early promise was short lived and Peterborough’s class on the ball slowly edged them back into the game.

Despite all their possession, it was a mad spell of five minutes from goalkeeper Gavin Ward that caused Wrexham the main problems when he completely missed a cross from the left and Carl Tremarco had to recover the ball off his line.

Wrexham looked uneasy defending the resulting corner and Ward did not help matters by rushing his clearance that ended at the feet of a Peterborough player midway inside the Wrexham half before the home side eventually cleared.

This set the tone for the remainder of the half with Wrexham struggling to gain any possession and Day was enjoying a lot of space down the Wrexham right that resulted in Stuart Nicholson having to play as a right winger to repel Peterborough’s constant attacks.

No further danger was posed on the Wrexham goal, except for a routine save for Ward from Mclean, and Wrexham had an early chance from a Spann corner at the start of the second half but Tremarco fired well over with a shot from fifteen yards.

Wrexham continued to only pose any threat from set plays and Broughton, who was virtually playing as a loan striker, should have done better when he could only glance a Spann free kick wide that deflected off a Peterborough player for a corner.

But the crucial break through came with twenty-five minutes left when Ward could only punch clear a Peterborough corner and Wrexham were well and truly penalised for Llewellyn’s handball when Day’s free kick was deflected in off the wall.

Simon Spender fired over a long range shot in reply for Wrexham but the ball was always rising into the away end and Wrexham made the first changes of the evening with Broughton and Nicholson replaced by Rob Duffy and Michael Proctor for the second game running.

Both players failed to register any noticeable impact on a game that was over six minutes later as Day fired in his second free kick of the game.

Peterborough had also made a change by this point but Liam Hatch’s first contribution of the game was a foul on Ward that earned the striker a quick booking and almost sparked another brawl amongst the players.

His second contribution proved to be more telling as he took advantage of a poor touch by Duffy and drew the foul from Whitley that resulted in Day firing in an unstoppable free kick from twenty-five yards.

Wrexham immediately introduced Paul Hall for Mike Williams and although he did look to have a lot more ideas up front that our four previous strikers, it was defender Phill Bolland who had our only shot at goal during this spell, but this went wide of the near post.

Match Reaction

Brian Little: "I think that they had the lion's share of possession at times but the two goals that we have conceded are both bad goals from our point of view, in terms of free-kicks on the edge of the box. They are dangerous positions but outside of that, in open play, while they are bright and a good side, I thought that we coped pretty well. I have to be reasonably pleased as we matched them in open play but the two set-pieces are the deciding factors in the game. The first one has taken a deflection and the second was in a good position for them. They might say that they deserved to win but I am reasonably satisfied. The problem is that we are playing good teams and good teams generally have something a little bit special." [Source: Wrexham FC -click here for more]
