Wrexham's final home league game of the season is
against Accrington Stanley who secured their own safety last weekend.
After the disappointment of relegation following the 2-0
defeat at Hereford on Tuesday, Wrexham only have pride left to play for
and Brian Little's interesting team selections of late could easily take another
unexpected turn.
Accrington have a strange record this season with only
three draws from there forty-four games.
But their fifteen wins has enabled Accrington to
secure their league status for a second season after returning to the
league after a fifty year absence.
Accrington have actually lost one more game than us
and it is no surprise that they have the worst defensive record either with
eighty goals conceded and this is fifteen more than us.
Accrington had made a positive start to the season but
with only one win from their last seven games, Stanley were starting to
look over their shoulder until results went for them last weekend.
The only three points in recent times was at home to
Dagenham and the last win on their travels was back at the beginning of
March when they came away from Rotherham with a 1-0 victory.
Despite this, Accrington have picked up eight wins on
the road this season and this is only one less than our total of a
disappointing campaign.
Top scorer for Accrington is striker Paul Mullin with
thirteen goals this season.
Mullin has been at the club since 2001 and is fast
approaching 100 goals since his arrival from Radcliffe Borough.
Manger John Coleman has been at the club even longer than
Mullin and arrived at Livingstone Road in 1999.
Accrington have also turned down an approach from John
Batchelor - of Mansfield/Harchester United fame - to relocate Accrington
to Leigh and player under the franchise name of Lancashire United.
It was no surprise that Chairman Eric Whalley, who has
been in charge of the club since 1995, turned down the £1.5 million
approach because he would never allow the club to change its famous
name.
Recent Encounters:
Our last match against Accrington last October was our
first away victory of the season with Neil Roberts scoring a goal in
each half.
This was our first win over Accrington since they
returned to the league with Stanley running out comfortable
winners on both occasions last season.
Team News:
None of the 14 players axed by Brian Little started at
Hereford, although Michael Proctor was a second half substitute at Edgar
Street.
Little has hinted that he would like to see Michael
Jones and Michael Carvill feature at some point in the final two games
but Carvill's appearance depends on if he has recovered from the injury
he sustained whilst away with Northern Ireland.
Jones is expected top replace Gavin Ward in goal but
Carl Tremarco, who was not one of the fourteen axed, is out for the
season with an ankle injury.
Accrington have no fresh injury worries ahead of the
match with only defender Robbie Williams out for the season with his
knee injury.
Elsewhere in League Two:
With our relegation already confirmed, the battle to
avoid the second relegation spot is now between five sides: Mansfield,
Dagenham, Notts County, Chester and Macclesfield.
Mansfield currently occupy this spot and they
entertain mid table Rotherham whilst Dagenham travel to Darlington who
have already secured a play off spot.
If both Mansfield & Dagenham lose then the three teams
above them will be safe as the Stags travel to East London on the last
day of the season. |
