Match Report

For the second away game in succession, Wrexham concede a winner in injury time with relegation rivals Notts County taking all three points when a draw would have been a fair result.

The defeat leaves us joint bottom of the Football League with Lincoln and you thought it was going to be another difficult afternoon after we failed to turn up for the first half.

County’s opening a goal was just embarrassing as Steve Evans got his back pass horribly wrong and could only manage to lay the ball into the path of Spencer Weir-Daley who had the simple task to round Williams in the Wrexham goal.

It could have got a lot worse for Wrexham before the first half ended but we had a couple of opportunities before half time and this gave us the confidence for a much improved second half showing.

Wrexham looked far more balanced when we switched to 4-4-2 following the introduction of Matty Done and Silvio Spann, who was a first half replacement for the injured Mark Jones, looked suited to the wide right position.

It was Spann who got us back on level terms with a thunderbolt of a shot from the edge of the area but his afternoon was soon to turn sour as the game entered injury time.

Spann was forced to play at right back following an injury to Simon Spender and the midfielder found himself chasing former Wrexham striker Hector Sam who was clean though on goal.

Spann probably took the right decision to take Sam out inside of the D and collected the inevitable red card – our fourth of the season – but the way we defended the free kick was just another embarrassment.

All the Wrexham fans could clearly see the gap in the Wrexham wall – it was that big you could drive a bus through it – and Neil MacKenzie took up Wrexham’s gift by curling the ball past Williams into the top corner of the net.

As expected, Notts County started the game on fire with new manager Ian McParland looking to impress in his first match at Meadow Lane.

Wrexham, showing four changes to the team with recalls for Anthony Williams in goal, Steve Evans in defence, Robbie Garrett in midfield, and Eifion Williams up front, looked uncomfortable especially at the back.

The pace a trickery of Miles Weston caused us a lot of problems down our right early on with Steve Evans looking way off the pace of the game.

Despite the home side enjoying the better of the opening ten minutes, they were unable to test the recalled Anthony Williams in the Wrexham goal but to concede the opener in the manner we did after 17 minutes was frustrating to say the least and nobody knows what went through the mind of Steve Evans as he left the ball on the edge of the area for Weir-Daley to collect and score.

It could have been two in as many minutes for the home side when Myles Weston was allowed far too much space to measure up a shot destined for the top corner until Williams pulled off a great save to tip the ball around the post.

Chris Llewellyn had our best chance of the game midway through the first half when Neil Roberts cushioned Spender’s right wing cross into the path of the midfielder but he headed wide from close range.

As the half wore on, we finally began to make inroads on the County defence and Pilkington was finally forced into action just before half time when Hope connected with Spann’s free kick but the keeper turned his shot over the bar.

Wrexham continued where we left off at the start of the second half with Silvio Spann the main attacking outlet down the right.

Spann delivered three teasing crosses to keep the County defence under pressure but no one in a red shirt could get on the end of them and the chances were lost.

County could have put the game beyond us when a mix up by Evans in the defence but he got lucky when MacKenzie could only shoot straight at Williams.

Wrexham, now playing 4-4-2 after Matty Done replaced Steve Evans, were now enjoying far more of the possession but a lack of creativity meant all our shots were coming from long range but Garrett was the only player to pull off a save from Pilkington, although Spann connected well with a shot but Eifion Williams got in the way and deflected the ball wide.

But when you have the ability of Silvio Spann, long shots are not a problem as a long range effort from the Trinidadian brought us on level terms with twenty minutes left.

There looked nothing on when Spann collected a pass from Spender but his twenty yard shot flew like a bullet into bottom corner giving Pilkington no time to react in the County goal.

Wrexham continued to press and Spann looked class down the right and another quality ball in from him looked perfect for Hope but the County defence managed to crowd out the Wrexham captain and his header was blocked en route to goal.

Wrexham then lost Simon Spender to injury and this brought around a surprise change with Michael Proctor coming on to play on the right wing with Spann dropping to full back.

Moving Spann back was surprising as he was our best player on the pitch at the time and the other option would have been to bring on Mike Williams with Gareth Evans moving to the right.

It was Spann who was caught out for the winning goal in the second minute of injury time when he looked to have played Hector Sam onside and it was no surprise when he got shown red after fouling the former Wrexham striker on the edge of the area.

Wrexham fans could see what was going to happen with the free kick but on this occasion you wanted to be proved wrong, but unfortunately we were proved correct as more points were needlessly dropped.

Match Reaction

Brian Carey: "We came back into the game in the second half and played with a real purpose and had some good performances," said Carey. But it was just one of those days and we are gutted because we haven't taken the points because I felt we could have won. We have to deal with it and get on with it and have to create our own luck if we are to get out of this mess." [Source: BBC Sport]
