Match Report

Wrexham climbed off the bottom of the Football League, leapfrogging opponents Lincoln in the process, with a superb second half strike from Marc Williams separating the teams at the final whistle.

Neil Roberts, no longer captain of the Wrexham side, had a first half penalty saved and Lincoln finished the game with ten men as a much improved performance from Wrexham was enough to secure the three points.

Wrexham switched formation to 3-5-2 for the game with Danny Williams dropping into defence and Robbie Garrett made a positive impact with his return to a three man midfield.

Wrexham clearly had the hunger to do well from the first whistle but it was Lincoln who had the first ‘effort’ on goal when Hand had a cross come shot from the left wing that forced Anthony Williams to turn the ball over the bar for a corner which came to nothing.

Despite this early scare, Robbie Garrett, on his return to the Racecourse, provided Wrexham with a lot more endeavour in midfield and from one of his early runs, Wrexham forced a corner that was headed into the arms of the Lincoln goalkeeper.

The best Lincoln could offer was a free kick from long range but the Imps made a mess of their opportunity, which was eventually deflected wide for a corner.

Wrexham were positive going forward but struggled to create a clear cut opportunity in what was an entertaining game between two sides at the wrong end of the Football League.

Marc Williams was the player that looked most likely to score for Wrexham and after failing to connect with a Crowell set piece, the striker more or less fell over the leg of Nat Brown and Wrexham were awarded a penalty.

Following a deliberation between Neil Roberts and Matt Crowell, it was Roberts who stepped up to take the spot kick but he saw his effort turned around the post by a full stretch Marriott in the Lincoln goal.

This was hard luck on a Wrexham side that had dominated proceedings up to this point but when you are down at the wrong end of the table, luck rarely shines on your side.

Lincoln were struggling to cope with the movement of Mark Jones in the Wrexham midfield and had to result to foul the Welsh international at almost every opportunity but, despite being clear to everybody in the ground, it was only Matthew Dodds who ended in the book for a foul a cynical foul on Jones.

Jones was having his best game for a long while in a Wrexham shirt and he created the best opportunity of the game so far for Marc Williams when he headed a well floated cross straight at Marriott when a foot either side would have resulted in a certain goal.

Mark Stallard became the second Imps player to end up in the book for an inevitable foul on Jones but it was Lincoln who had a good chance on the strike of half time when Forrester skipped past Evans in the area but Danny Williams managed to push the ball behind for a corner.

The second half started with an early scare for Wrexham when left wing back, Neil Taylor, played Mark Stallard on side but he saw his shot cleared off the line by Mark Jones after skipping past the challenges of Williams and Evans.

Wrexham recovered and scored the game’s only goal five minutes following the restart.

The initial move down the left flank saw Neil Roberts collect the ball down the channel but the chance looked lost when Neil Roberts laid the ball back to Richard Hope on the half way line.

Hope then picked out Marc Williams on the edge of the area and the youngster took the ball down well on his chest before curling an unstoppable right footed shot into the far corner from eighteen yards out.

It was a superb strike from Williams in game that was always going to be split by a Momence of brilliance or a mistake at the back.

Wrexham were clearly energised following the goal and for a good fifteen minute spell created enough opportunities to extend the lead.

All the best chances fell to Marc Williams in particular and following move via Mark Jones and Neil Roberts, the latter dummied the cross from the former but Marc Williams was unable to connect sweetly with the ball and Lincoln managed to scramble clear.

Mark Jones fired a twenty five yard shot over the bar and another Wrexham break from a Lincoln corner should have ended with second goal for Marc Williams but he fired a lay off from Mark Jones high over the bar.

Lincoln were the reduced to ten men when Gary Croft collected his second caution in the space of five minutes for fouls on Michael Carvill – the second for an awful foul that ended a promising Wrexham attack – and ended with the inevitable red card.

Lincoln should have been down to nine men when Jamie Hand caught teenager Neil Taylor with a disgraceful challenge around his knee but the referee only awarded a throw in.

The Wrexham players were infuriated with the challenge and required a lot of calming down but Hand made a quick retreat when Steve Evans offered the midfielder out in the car park!

Marc Williams repeated the same trick as before after Neil Roberts dummied a Mark Jones cross but Williams was again unable to get his shot away after we broke quickly from a Lincoln corner.

Lincoln were the better team following the sending off as Wrexham conceded the ball far too easily and this resulted in the evitable pressure on our goal.

Anthony Williams flapped at a deep cross but Wrexham managed to scramble clear but Lincoln were unlucky from a set play when Carvill cleared suspiciously off the line with his hand but a lack of appeals meant the referee waived play on.

Referee Roger East awarded strange free kicks in Lincoln’s favour towards the end but Wrexham held on for a valuable three points.

Add to this a clean sheet and a much improved performance, then climbing off bottom spot is no more than we deserved.

Match Reaction

Brian Carey: "The manner in which we played was good but more importantly, as we have said for the last few weeks, we've had a result today. It was a good goal from Marc and I thought that our front two caused them a lot of problems, but as I've said I am just delighted with the win. When we missed the penalty I was not too concerned, I just thought that we would keep going and believe in what we are doing, that is what are like these days. We've had a set-backs but we will just stick to our game plan and stick to what we set out to do. We changed the system and it worked quite well but I thought that we had eleven performances today. I don't know if the players felt more comfortable with the system but I suppose as we won you would have to say yes. I have said all along that we have got to be adaptable and flexible in everything that we do. [Source: Wrexham FC - click here for more]
