Rush: Wrexham should be in the First Division

Tonight's Evening Leader in the story "A touch of class" reports that former Wales and Liverpool legend ian Rush reckons that Brian Flynn's Robins are good enough to make the Second Division play-offs this season.

The ex-Wrexham, Liverpool, Juventus and Newcastle star is quoted in tonight's Leader as saying: "I believe Wrexham should be in the First Division. They’ve got a lot going for them and I know that from my time there. They’re obviously good enough. The result they got at Walsall was no fluke. I haven’t seen Lee Trundle play yet – but I’ve heard all about him. Goalscorers are worth their weight in gold and this lad seems a real find for Wrexham. . . just when they need to be knocking them in".

In addition, Nationwide in the story "Goal-mad Trundle could be worth a bundle" quotes Lee Trundle himself as saying: "I'm playing on better pitches with better players and that suits me. It's my job to score goals and at the moment things are going well. People say that I may have a dip in form, but that doesn't worry me. I go out in each game believing I'm going to score - and being a striker is all about being confident. It really does help having Kevin Reeves coach me because he was such a good player at the highest level and it helps me because I can learn things from him to improve my game. I like flair players like David Ginola and people who do stuff on the ball and entertain the crowd. I also admire strikers like Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Denis Bergkamp, because they're class players and the goals they score are out of this world. That's why I like to model myself on someone like them".

Tonight's Evening Leader in the story "Lee cues for a pot of goals" also quotes the 24-year-old Scouse marksman as saying: "You need to have ‘goals’ to go for. It’s no good just staying where you are. You have to strive to be the best – and play for the best. That’s how I see it. You’ve got to make the most of what comes your way. I like to set myself high standards. I always have, even when I was playing non-league. Having said that you’re only as good as your last game – and you can do no better than your next game. Obviously, I’m very happy the way things are going at Wrexham. The goals are going in and I’m getting my share. I’ve also been pleased with the quality of some of the goals I’ve scored. I think the fans are, too! We’re all on a rollercoaster ride at the moment. Fans come to matches to see goals and we’re knocking ‘em in. Our recent run began with that fantastic comeback at Walsall. I think a lot of people thought we were out of it when we went 2-0 down. I then got our first goal with that overhead-kick which, I must admit, I was made up with. The fans seem to enjoy that one as well. We then beat Northampton at home 3-0 and I scored again before that cracking game against Oxford when I got my first League hat-trick. That’s a bit of a milestone for me but now I’m looking to get more hat-tricks and more match balls! I know I can’t expect to score in every game, although it’s going very well at the moment. But there’s going to be a time when the goals perhaps dry up. That’ll happen and we’ve all got to be prepared for that. But I live in the present and let the future come along. . . what will be, will be, as they say. I’m just happy to be doing the job I’ve really always wanted to do – playing League football. I started at Burscough and did all right there before moving on to Chorley. I then moved on to Stalybridge before joining Southport and then Rhyl. Life’s a funny thing, though. If I hadn’t left Southport I’d never have joined Rhyl and if that move hadn’t happened I’d never have played against Wrexham and scored a hat-trick against them. That’s the way it’s turned out. It’s fate, I suppose. Everything is new to me at the moment. Going in training every day. . . overnight hotelstops like we had last week before the win at Cambridge, and I like it. I’m really enjoying it. Wrexham, I hope, is the opening of the door for me. As I said earlier, you need to have ‘goals’ to go for. I’ll just take it all in my stride and see where it leads. That’s exciting as well, isn’t it?”.

Nationwide quotes Wrexham boss Brian Flynn as saying about hot-shot Trundle: "I don't want to go overboard, but he's certainly made quite an impact - six goals in four games is a good return by any standards. I saw him play for Rhyl against Bangor early in the season and against us in a friendly. I definitely felt there was something about him, that he had something a bit special. I invited him down to train with us and he didn't look out of place. Of course it was a gamble to spend what was a lot of money for a club like Wrexham, but if he carries on scoring it'll have been a risk worth taking - and there may eventually be huge rewards when you consider how valuable strikers are in the modern game".

Nationwide also quotes assistant-manager Kevin Reeves as saying about Trundle: "Lee has a real appetite for the game and a willingness to learn. He's determined to succeed and prove what he always felt, that he's good enough for the pro game. He's also got an incredible array of tricks which so far have come off in Division Two. Maybe the tricks are why other clubs hesitated when they thought about signing him".
