TRIALIST Andy Robinson hit a fine hat-trick as Wrexham went on the rampage against Chesterfield at a rain-lashed Saltergate.

Despite being up against an experienced Spireites side, Wrexham dominated the first half and took the lead through a Carlos Edwards thunderbolt on 13 minutes.

After picking up the ball just inside the touchline, the Trinidadian, suspended from the first team for the next two matches, rifled in a 30-yard effort that had Chester-field keeper Andy Richmond beaten as soon as it left his boot.

But Chesterfield restored parity six minutes later when goalkeeper Kristian Rogers and captain Brian Carey got in a mix-up and Jon Howard nipped in to level.

Yet on 32 minutes Robinson, who plays his football in the West Cheshire League with Cammell Laird, got onto the end of Edwards' cross to put the Dragons back in front.

Five minutes later as Wrexham boss Denis Smith was entering the ground, Welsh under-21 player Mark Jones, who travelled up from Cardiff where he was an unused substitute against Italy, smashed home a 20-yard effort.

Jones then hit the woodwork at the beginning of the second half before sub Jordan Hall lobbed Rogers to make it 3-2.

But Wrexham accelerated away and Robinson converted another Edwards cross on 68 before stepping up to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot seven minutes later.

After the Spireites had their own claim for a penalty turned down, Wrexham stormed up the field and were only stopped by a foul from Kevin Dawson, who was shown his second yellow card.

And with minutes remaining Wrexham piled on the agony for 10-man Chesterfield as Alec Stacey hit a thunderous 20-yard screamer.

Coach Joey Jones said: "They had a good side out but we scored some great goals. Carlos' attitude has been spot-on and as well as scoring a great goal he set up a few as well. The lad Robinson has done himself no harm at all and we'll be keeping a close eye on him."

WREXHAM RESERVES: Rogers; Evans, Dabbs, Sudlow, Carey, Stacey, M Jones, C Edwards, Campbell, Robinson, Sam.
